McDonanld’s cakes were sometimes lifted by a friend(who ran one in college) and we would snack on that, after a particularly fun night of partying.

Omg – I can taste/feel the icing on that cake. It was the most granulated weird gesture that they printed the graphic into. I remember being 6 years old and thinking, “that’s a bit sweet for my taste”.

Do they even do these anymore? I had and went to a few of those back in the 80s. I still miss the orange drink. We’d always get to play on the old school playground afterwards with the big hamburger thing you could climb up in and the steel sliding board.

I had 2 birthdays at McDonald’s as a kid. Both times we were only allowed to drink Hi-C (as a kid back then unlimited access to a soda fountain was one of my three favorite things) and they only gave us cheap plastic tops inside of the Happy Meals (never the current set of toys for the promotional period).

But yes, those little gold-colored ashtrays.

I worked as a sort of PR person at a McDonald’s about 10 years before this (slightly less hideous uniform, easier duties), and one thing I did was host the birthday parties. I always felt a little sad because having your birthday there seemed a little sad? so I would lard the kids with giveaways. I think in 1984 they had special birthday hats, cake, placemats, little freebies waiting for them, a happy meal plus the current toy. I would find Fry Guy coloring books, Grimace sponges, pencils and whatever else in the back to supplement.

Glad people on this thread have happy memories of these parties!

I came from a family of hard-working immigrants, many of whom were relegated to menial jobs and worked really hard to provide a good life for their children. And I had a party there in 1991 and I unwrapped a present and it was a Super NES with Mario World! I was sooooo happy.

In hindsight I had no idea how hard my family had to work to get me something like that, but they’d never deny us the finer things in life even though they had to work their asses off.

I was always SO jealous of the kids that got those. Now as a parent, it would be flipping amazing if this was a thing again.
