Still one of my all time favorite movies, with easily the best president speech (next to Armageddon’s that is) in disaster/sci-fi movie history imo. Goosebumps every freakin’ time I hear either.
I’ve always wondered : with such huge flying saucers, to destroy the maximum of stuff and splatter even more humans, why not just instal a huge hard sphere under the fyling saucer and just… land?
I can assure you that this absolutely was not the case. We saw things in this movie that we’d never, ever seen before. And it got the hype it deserved.

Edit. And now he’s comparing it to Star Wars… fuck this.
“At the time it wasn’t anything special in of itself” “Your average summer popcorn flick”? … what?
This is completely wrong. It was all the hype during that summer and everyone was talking about it, tons of people saw it multiple times. You should really do a bit more research before making these types of claims. Better luck next time.
I absolutely love this movie, and it’s pure embrace of bat-shit-insanity.
Will Smith can pilot an alien craft solely because he got into a dog-fight with it? Jeff Goldblum’s computer-genius character has to be helped to the idea of giving their computers a virus? Alienware uses Microsoft systems? They let Will Smith on a top-secret base because he has an alien body?
I forget the rest, but it’s all gold- all of it. Roland Emmerich is probably a Paul Verhoeven with less gratuitous nudity and blood.
My dream is for this movie to be made into a proper, Ace Combat-esque video game. Maybe follow the fight in another part of the world. There was a game released many years ago when the movie was out but the gaming technology wasn’t advanced enough to do it right.
I’m still someone who prefers special effects over CGI. I also think that if you have to use CGI it should only be done when its used to aid the practical effects or if you’re doing a background like what was done for The Mandalorian.
That said the reason why Independance Day is so memorable is because of its cliche memorable scenes and big practical effect set pieces. I HIGHLY recommend you look at the behind the scenes stuff for the movie because its fascinating to see how they did a lot of the practical effects.
It came out in a year with a presidential race. Bob Dole (R) vs incumbent Bill Clinton seeking reeelection as a D.
Because the president was portrayed as being strong, this rubbed critics of Clinton raw as he “loathed the military” in his youth and was seen as weak. People cheered and were shocked when the White House was blown up because Clinton was president. The death of the First Lady was thought to generate sympathy for the Clintons.
Bob Dole was a bonafide war hero. And after he saw it, his comments were, “ Leadership. America. Good over evil.” It was the most “Bob Dole” thing ever.

The power of high quality practical effects.

Like a bottle of Ripple that still tastes like shit 25 years later…

Predator still holds up.

So it peaked and is starting to lose all of the things that made it great?
This is such a stupid thing to say publicly
It was a massive hit. But if it’s aged like wine then the bottle was corked

Uninteresting take. At least, it’s fun to compare this guy videos from 12 years ago. Up to you to decide if he aged like fine wine.
