I have a family member who owns an African Gray. It talks in our dead mother’s voice and calls our names. You haven’t experienced chills until you hear something like that.
My ex’s parents had a 50 year old Parrot and that thing was a riot. It would get mad and scream if we didn’t give it scotch with dinner and if we fed it anything but what we were eating it would just get on the table and take the food it wanted. It would sometimes get drunk and sway on the perch until he fell asleep and then he would sometimes just fall off the perch. He knew all sorts of words and phrases and would sing Beatles songs. He was a crazy animal.

(Trigger warning: this video is a reflection of Alex’s life after he passed away, so some sadness involved at the end.)
These birds are facinating and creepy. Like, I know it’s smart. But there is an uncanniness to how realistic their inflections and mimicry can sound juxtaposed with their stoic little doll eyes.
Can parrots understand the difference between feathers and hair? Like could this parrot look at a human and be like “ah I see this is just one strand of keratin rather than a large rigid strand of keratin with smaller softer strands coming out of it”? Or would a parrot be like “we both got fluffy stuff on us, I don’t see a difference, these are both feathers”?
I cleaned the house for a family their bird coughed like an old man. A couple of times I asked, if he wanted me to call the Doctor. He goes NNNNNNOOOOOOOO. Doctor I am not sick.
