They opened for Parquet Courts this past spring and absolutely blew me away. I mostly knew them from their inclusion on Songs From Saharan Cellphones, but what they’ve got going now is so much fun.
While I’m going to pistol-whip the next person who comments “tHe REaL SuLTaNs oF SwInG” on every video of theirs on Youtube, every time I come across these guys I stop to listen. Something about the rhythms they use just make this psychedelic sound come off as really, really fresh.
Saw them headline a small show a few months ago, and it was like I was put into a trance. The guitarists are obviously amazing, but the bassist and drummer are so locked in it was hard for me to not focus on them.
The guitar work here is not difficult or impressive IMO. It sounds more difficult than it is because he makes very liberal usage of this hammer on/off technique that makes notes change really fast but takes very little practice to learn. He also constrains his guitar solos to a small subset of the scale for reasons I don’t understand, and most solos see his left hand remain in the same position for long periods. The harmonies are maximally boring. Basically zero effort harmonies. Like one chord most of the time and 2 or 3 chords in the entire song. I’m not sure what there is to appreciate here.
Love these guys, caught them live a month ago, great show!
Mdou Moctar is great. One of my fav videos is [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFZobgLF5Vc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFZobgLF5Vc)
In my opinion this whole “desert blues” thing has really injected some fresh air into Blues music / Rock.

My wife and I often listen to this during dinner.
For those of you who haven’t heard of it, KEXP has a TON of excellent live performances on their YouTube channel. I highly recommend checking it out.
These African blues guitarists are really phenomenal. I have no idea what theyre saying but my god I love listening to it.

The best rock guitar music in the world currently comes out of Africa, particularly any country that borders the Sahara
KEXP is excellent. Discovered many great artists through them.
Afrique Victime is honestly one of the best albums of 2021
Saw these guys at Greenman this year and were by far my highlight of a very musically strong festival.

Whaaa? You’ve actually posted good music?
I’ve set up and run sound for two performances for Mdou and met the band several times. They are all good guys.
I saw them in pittsburgh a few years ago. Absolutely mind blowing. Glad to see them getting gassed up on Reddit.

I am Greek and these sounds hit a bit home. Wonder if it is the lyrical aspect / rythm of the song hmm.
