I hate being the old guy saying “they don’t make music like this anymore” but Jesus christ what happened? 30 years ago you’d see a whole mixture of genres in mainstream music. Interesting acts would get some exposure through the most popular channels. Alternative stuff at least had a chance of breaking through. Now you have to really dig around to find stuff like this and the artists making it are usually fairly local and have to work day jobs so they can never really flourish. Only the most generic Kurt Vile types get through, or the children of movie producers and bankers who have the time and money to self produce. True weirdo artists just can’t get exposure anymore, it’s gotta be hyper bland and streamlined.
Everything needs to appeal to Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa and little Billy in third grade or it’s a waste of the industries thinning resources. Im sorry to fans of “indie” musicians like Mac Demarco or Kurt Vile, they aren’t awful but those guys don’t hold a candle to groups like this, they use the aesthetic of alternative music with absolutely none of the risks. This music was truly offbeat and risky. It takes elements of punk and rock acts before them and pushes it’s boundaries further to make something new resulting in a unique, super low key sound.
We can never have this again because it has little chance of appealing to the tiktok generation and their parents. We can’t have something like Jesus and Mary Chain doing feedback noise on national television, inspiring others to build upon that noise to lead to something new and exciting. They can’t take that kind of risk again. No Nirvana ever again, or something different and new but analogous to what they did for mainstream music.
The people making what would be the next wave of indie rock music are stuck working day jobs and will never get past the algorithm. It’s only gonna get worse. The entertainment industry as we know it is dying, they cannot put money behind people like this anymore unless it guarantees success, so it’s gonna be songs like “old Town road” and movies starring The Rock and Ryan Reynolds for as long as the algorithm sees fit.
This song has meant a lot to me since I first heard it in the movie Angus. It plays during a huge scene in the movie. Hearing it brings me back to being a teenager going through a lot of issues I didn’t understand at that time.
I have been in love with this song for over 20 years. It’s just perfect.
Hope Sandoval is like a cryptid – angelic voice, mysterious, beautiful, mesmerizing
“so tonight that i might see” was my go-to album when i brought girls back to my room in college.
The pre lana queen
I do don’t know why – but this video is “stuck” in my Youtube feed, I do not think I have ever watched it.
Ethereal
Its wild that she was 28 at the time of this video
That’s a VH1 logo.
Man, what ever happened to her, she was doing the thing.
Not trying to hate on this song specifically, but I’ve always hated the mid-‘90s singer/songwriter genre and I’m not sure why.
Love hearing songs that sound as great performed live as they do on the album.
Angus
Why does all music suck compared to the 90s?
I will never not upvote this song.
Big fan of dream pop, I like Chromatics and cigarettes after sex, it Trevor nothing.
Why does this song get posted on reddit so often?
just realized this song is in starship troopers during the Xander/Rico fight scene last night. Weird timing

Oh shit Hope Sandoval has been my eternal crush since I first listened to Mazzy Star. Won’t ever get over her.
