“Max & Moritz” is the beloved, oft reprinted, widely translated classic German 1865 book for children, about the innocent adventures of two lovable titular little boys, who try to murder a neighbor in their village, rob another neighbor, burn another neighbor’s face, and end up murdered and eaten.

Are you mental?
“end up murdered and eaten”
For good reason.
You can tell they’re little shits just by their hair cuts and smarmy grins.
Dont forget how they start their career by murdering a widows chickens by connecting some bread to strings, so they get stuck on the branches of a tree and slowly suffocate to death.
I had the chance of seeing several of the originals (small exhibition in Haus Ludwig, Saarlouis), they are way smaller than I thought. The linework is beautifully precise, and it’s actually kind of super-impressively modern for the era, when you realize it was published in 1865
I can tell you that I am German, I had this book as a child and I thought it was very creepy. Nothing about their story was funny or a cute prank.
Those sadistic shitfaces????
Truly and unironically one of my favourite stories.
Is this the one where they get punished by being dyed black or is that Dutch?
i am pretty sure this is universally recognized as a creepy parody and that was intended by the author in the 1800s
sort of the same vein as ‘the stinky cheese man’ or maybe shrek
Reminds me of the old Katzenjammer Kids comic strip.
A book most likely read to Dwight Schrute during his childhood.
