The duet he sang with Tammy Terrell on “You’re all I need to get by” is great. He does something in that song I’d never heard anyone do in a pop song: he addresses her directly. In between versus he sings “Oh, yeah, yeah. Tammy, listen”. That sort of intrigued me, so I read up on them.
While on stage together in 1967, she passed out in the middle of a performance, into his arms. She was found to have a malignant brain tumor. They went on to record “You’re all I need to get by” but her illness was affecting her ability to sing, so she had to stop performing. Some time later, she was at a show of his and he spotted her in the front row. He came down off the stage to her and they sang that song together, one last time. She died less than a year later.
Just look at that smile!
Marvin was a great talent

Someone ought to make a screenplay out of that.
