Marie Antoinette | Series 1 Trailer – BBC

  • I don’t understand this weird impulse by the film/television industry to make Marie Antoinette into a likable, romanticized anti-hero protagonist.

In reality, Marie Antoinette was just a disconnected wealthy young woman who spent profligately on clothes and decorating her estates, and was an obstacle to the attempts at financial reform to solve France’s growing debt crisis. Little of her behavior is entirely her fault, as she never really knew anything different. But it also doesn’t make her an interesting character for a show, unless perhaps it wanted to speculate that she was dyslexic or something, since she was terrible at her schooling, could barely read or write, and never learned to speak fluent French despite living in France for 23 years.

Honestly, Marie Antoinette’s greatest contribution to history may be that she was so obstinate/oblivious that she helped accelerate the downfall of the French monarchy and the increased popularity of republican forms of government.
