I have a good friend that does this kind of mural work. He paints too, and did the SXSW backstage mural years ago.
Anyway it was so amazing watching him work and to see the final piece when he finished. Not less than 24 hours later, someone tagged over it.
He shrugged it off basically telling me “that’s how street art goes” but I was furious for him.
That video brought tears to my eyes. Love nothing more than someone that has the opportunity to put the soul into their work.
What a talent in a medium so often overlooked.
“Hand cut stencils” has to 100% be wrong here.
Why the fuck would they do that when tools exist to do it for you? I am sure they used something similar to a vinyl cutter.
“Hand taped” stencils is what you were looking for here. They took the stencils and taped them by hand. If he had cut these by hand, we would have seen the first 3 minutes dedicated to showing how insanely tedious that process would be.
Pretty cool looking result. Dumb headline.
Don’t feel like stencils used this way are special in any way.
There’s not much of art here just dedication and work. I looks like they took a picture then used photoshop to turn it into vectors then printed that stuff out and got down to cutting out.
Why paint with spray paint cans here? Cans are handy for taggers as they’re portable. But for a professional, and using stencils, why would you not have an actual paint sprayer or even roll on paint over the stencils? Using cans seems like such a pain in the ass and waste of money for what I can only assume is some artistic attachment to street graffiti taggers, which this work is worlds away from being.
Fantastic. I hate those assholes that trash cities by spraying their tags everywhere but this is different.
See people here discussing the “cutting” of the stencils.
Legit question, if he hand cut the first layer (he stated 80 hours of cutting). It was destroyed that first day after the rain, you see them tearing it down.
If he cut it by hand, does that mean he had an exact backup of that first layer on hand?
Edit: word
Imagine planning for all of this but not planning for rain or any type of weather events.
A large tarp draped down from the top of the building would have solved all of the worries.
