I plan on Christmas dinner at a Chinese restaurant this year. Fa rah rar rar rah rah rah rah rah
It’s a horrible Jewish tradition because you just wait hours, every restaurant is packed to the gills and no one’s enjoying themselves on xmas. Been trying to talk my folks out of it for a decade already. Same with the movies. The secret is out!
Yom Kippur, not Christmas folks. Fasting starts tomorrow at sundown for all those observing.
Probably a good idea to close, we usually stick with breakfast foods for the break fast meal after Yom Kippur. I can’t imagine a big plate of Chinese food after fasting for a day, gotta save that for Christmas.
I’ve started doing single man, non-theistic Chinese food Christmas and it is awesome. I don’t have a Jewish background, but getting some Chinese take-out and not have to worry about family gatherings is the way to go.
That “Neighborhood Fave” award at the bottom was well earned it seems.
Why is American Chinese food on Christmas sucha Jewish tradition anyway? I mean why not just eat at home whatever one would ordinarily make for any day of the week?
So I assume 9/24 was closed for Yom Kippur, 9/25 is closed because Monday was their usual day off.
So Jewish people don’t go out and eat on Yom Kippur?
There are also Jewish Chinese people, both people who have converted and a small population that emigrated to China during the Jewish diaspora.
Crazy idea here, but hear me out.

Open up a few Chinese-American restaurants in Israel and push the Jewish American tradition of Christmas Chinese food hard for the first few years.

Culturally, there’s little reason to participate this way, but look at the number that KFC did in Japan in selling buckets of chicken for Christmas in a mostly non-christian country — after a while, the restuarant chain can become known as a traditional Christmas food in Israel and just ride that reputation to year-round food sales.
If I had to guess, I would say that this is a kosher restaurant. And because it is kosher it can’t be opened on the holidays and on Saturday.
Yes, someone call. I say “Cartwright! Cartright!” but no one come and I hang up.
Man I could go for a good chinese buffet right about now.
When I was growing up (born in 1965) we celebrated holidays with my mom’s side of the family. It was a very large family and I believe my cousins numbered in the 20’s. That is a lot of kids to keep in line and entertained for the day long get together we celebrated on holidays. But then one year someone (probably one of the dads) came up with the idea of dropping the kids off at the movies. Going to a movie was a special treat, so we kids were all for this holiday movie trip idea! So a tradition was born, and for many years on major holidays my cousins and I would get to go to the movies. I have some really happy memories of enjoying those trips with my cousins. So, it wasn’t only the Jewish community enjoying movie theater trips on major Christian holidays, many Christian’s were at those movies as well! 🙂
Hi there,
stupid European here. I quiet dont understand the context here.
Maybe one of u is so nice and enlighten me.
Yom Kippur, I guess. Usually even non Orthodox Jews are fasting.

Opens the door
Throwa few coins in
Clientelle returns
Profit
And yet the reputation is for Chinese restaurants to be open on Christmas and filled with Jewish patrons. I love the irony!
(there are also Jewish Chinese people out there…)
I wonder if the movie “Christmas Story” with little Ralphie increased the trend of Jewish families having lunch at their closest Chinese restaurant on Christmas day and ordering their largest duck roasted to a golden brown haha! There must be at least a few first generation Chinese Americans who saw the movie and decided to advertise in the newspaper in mid-December.
That’s pretty wholesome.
Respect
My mom’s best friend since kindergarten is Jewish, and her family goes out for Chinese food and then the movies every Xmas day. No joke.
It’s definitely that they understand their clientele, at the same time we Jews do have a fuck ton of holidays, so if you want a day off it’s pretty easy to use it as an excuse xD. I definitely abused the fall holidays to skip classes when I was in highschool and early in college.
Well…… it is a Jews birthday they are closed for.

I’m pretty sure I know where this is. If I’m correct, its certified Kosher to the highest Orthodoxy level (Hashgacha – השגחה). In order for them to maintain that they must be closed on the high holidays since there are no Rabbis available to watch and keep the certification active.
i never knew there was this connection between jewish and chinese people. i’m mexican and my family always grew up celebrating christmas on christmas eve. every christmas day we would go see a movie and eat at chinese restaurant and i thought we were the only people that did that 😂😂
