Lies of P demo was way better than I expected

It’s like Bloodborne, Bioshock & Pinnochio all in one. I see why they were confident enough to put out a demo.

  • It’s exactly what I was hoping for. Very reminiscent of From Software stuff with many of the mechanics and level design.

The presentation is also really nice, and the story seems interesting so far.

The combat is fun (not as good as From but I still liked it) and it looks like there’s a lot of customization to be had with the weapons and handles, plus the arms.

I’m sold on it completely after the Demo.

  • It’s either harder than bloodborne or i just can’t grasp Ps mechanics. I platted bloodborne no summons but I can’t even get to the second phase of the electricity boss

  • Man I really wished I liked standard soulslike combat cause the setting, visuals, and atmosphere are all top-fucking-notch. I just can’t handle this kind of gameplay.

  • It looks pretty, but it’s also janky, even when just moving. The combat needs a lot of work. It feels like Bloodborne at home, but since the devs couldn’t really make it feel like Bloodborne, they decided to compromise and include blocking instead of improving the flow of combat/dodging, and made it too strong. But if they made it any weaker the combat would feel a lot worse since dodging feels off and costly, making P not feel very agile. That combined with enemies being too agressive and not having many openings makes poking into too much of the combat.

  • Couldn’t get past first puppet boss in train station. No mental energy to try another 20 times, even though I might have gotten him eventually. Remembered why I never will play soulslike games, it’s not for me. That said, I like what I saw. Immersive world, breathtaking art direction, dark fantasy worldbuilding and dark beauty. Something I crave dearly and enjoy seeing in media. Also ran buttery smooth and looked very good.

Someday we may get a dark fantasy game with easier difficulty for dumbasses like me. Until then, I wish biggest luck to the devs and great sales for this game. Truly a gem in the darkness of modern gaming horrors.

  • I had the opposite experience – it was worse than I expected. For all the talk of how Bloodborne-inspired this is, its so much slower, jankier and less fluid than Bloodborne. In fact the movement and combat reminds me of Steelrising, which was another huge disappointment. I feel like “all your enemies are actually robots/puppets/automatons” is a cheap get-out clause to justify stiff janky animations.

  • I’m happy devs are starting to get closer to getting that miyazaki formula right. I’ve been waiting for a game like this that gives you the option to dodge like soulsborne or deflect like Sekiro, and this really scratches that very specific itch.

  • I wish the combat was smoother. If you want to copy Sekiro and make dodging not that good, then give clear telegraphs to all attacks for deflection. As it is now, standing away and poking after attacks is the best option, which makes combat somewhat boring.

  • It’s good. I love the designs and everything. One small problem i had was the dodge? Very unresponsive and didn’t cover much distance.

Sometimes you’d dodge one attack and not be able to dodge the follow-up.

That and P had a tendency to get hit stunned and unable to break out an enemy combo.

Some small tweaks to fix these issues and then we’ll have a very very good game on our hands

  • I still don’t understand the comparisons to bloodborne. Just cause it’s dark and gritty? I mean I see no lovecraftian themes, no trick weapons that I saw, no badass outfits or anything close to chalice dungeons. It also doesn’t seem like being super aggressive is nearly as rewarding. Am I missing something?

  • I literally saw the description “Pinocchio themed souls-like” and thought it sounded neat enough to try. Can confirm it is a Pinocchio themed souls-like. Not super innovative but solidly put together

  • Long time Souls-Like player here.
Finished the demo in 1.6 hours as per Steam counter.
The game seems really solid, runs so well even without DLSS or FSR.
The ambient is also pretty well done.
They reuse a lot of enemies which is to be expected.

It also kind of reminds me more of Dark Souls 3 rather than BB.
The dodge could use a little work to be honest, it feels very slow though I played STR and VIT build with default greatsword, still didn’t feel any different on lighter weapons.
Combat feels good, but the range of the weapons not so much, feels like I need to stick to the enemies to hit them even with larger weapons.

It has great potential and I hope it continues to deliver, demo is really really good, if they manage to stick to that the entire game and refine some things, it will be a good Souls-Like.

  • It might have been said in the comments but this game doesn’t come out till September and the pre release deme feels more bug free the 90 percent of games released lately.
Played on PC so if console had any issues I wouldn’t know.

  • I liked it! However, I can’t help but feel I’ve already played it. 3 hours into the demo and it feels incredibly similar to SteelRising. I do like this more though and I’m sure the various systems that are introduced will do well in making it feel different.

  • I loved the graphics, character design and how the game felt to play; but at first I played the game with the regular sword and felt kinda underwhelmed by it; that all changed when I switched to the Rapier/Dexterity build and I immediately fell in love with the game. Somehow a simple weapon change made me go from ehhh to :O

  • The theming and atmosphere were pretty top notch. Twitching robots have never been a favorite enemy of mine but ok. The combat felt off to me though. Not a lot of impact. Kind of off feeling dodge, but parry was nice.

Idk it felt pretty middling to me. Another cool looking soulslike for the pile.

  • Dodging distance needs to be doubled and more iframes.
The hitboxes around the first boss can be weird (you get stuck between its legs).
The level design is a bit rigid / square.

    Very good attempt, though. 7/10.

  • Can’t wait for the Lampwick fight where phase 2 he turns into a weredonkey.

“Whats that smell? Ahhh the the sweet beer sings to me…Enough to make a man sick!”

  • One of the coolest things about the demo for me was >!luring the mid boss donkey guy towards some enemies that I didn’t kill, and they fought each other (because it makes sense with the story/lore)!<. Details like that add so much to the game. I hope that we see more opportunities for those types of interactions.

  • I really like this game, but damn is it tough (for me, anyway). Im still stuck in the Elysion Boulevard section with that tall Policeman puppet in the courtyard (same spot where the lady asks if you’ll return her baby to her). I just cant beat this dude. I must have tried 25-30 times last night before calling it a night.

Im planning to try again tonight. I parry and dodge but he gets three hits and im done. Lol. On parrying, are you supposed to hold block when the enemy winds up to swing or press it as theyre swinging? Obviously I have a skill issue cause ive never played these types of games before. But as frustrating as it is, I’m determined to finish this demo.

  • Really liking it too so far (just killed the first boss) but is it or can you absolutly not animation cancel? It just feels off being stuck in an animation until it’s completley over. Maybe I’m misremembering as it has been some time but I don’t remember the Souls games doing so

  • Good and pretty generous demo, props for devs for showing off what their game is really going to be about.

Only thing I’m worried about this game is that it’s launching right into a same time with other major releases. Like Cyberpunk Expansion/Overhaul, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield. I’d be shame if quality game doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Oh, and optimization deserves a special mention. It’s almost *chefs kiss* on that regard.
