Lars Von Trier talking about David Lynch

  • Wow, this guy is an idiot. Purports to comment on the meaning of Twin Peaks while admitting he hasn’t seen The Return. Then “hides under a desk for an hour” to blow off David Lynch, who Von Trier accuses of selling out by…talking to some people wearing suits?? While having no idea at all about who the people in the suits were? What an astonishingly immature, dumb take.

  • It’s always a bit sad to see von Trier these days. His physical decline seems to worsen with every interview. I thought he sounded a bit off and looked in a bad way a few years back when he was doing press for The House that Jack Built, but if anything, he’s in an even worse shape here. I don’t know if he’s still drinking heavily or if this is just a symptom of his medication or other health issues, but as someone who grew up following his career fairly closely, he’s like a shadow of his former self.

I understand his points about TM and its associations to new age grifters, but Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me *did* conclude the narrative arc of the original run of Twin Peaks, and explained its emotional and psychological context incredibly well. Twin Peaks the Return is something different. Its mysteries are meant to be interpreted by the audience (or merely enjoyed for their own expression, without comprehension) and not necessarily solved or concluded by the filmmaker.

I’m looking forward to the new series of The Kingdom, but again, von Trier is barely coherent here, and seems to be suffering a great deal.

  • i cant even begin to describe how massively better David Lynch is a filmmaker compared to Von Trier. he is light years away from being at the level Lynch is and he is delusional if he thinks otherwise
