One of the most incredible things you can see on a sporting field
First player to kick 1000 since 1995 and likely the last ever, amazing.
Storming the field during the game is wild
And we win the cricket at the same time what a moment in sport for Australia
What a superstar. With one to go in the last quarter you just knew he was getting it. He absolutely lives for the clutch moments. An absolute superstar of the game, arguably the best forward to ever do it, I will never forget the joy he has given me as a hawthorn supporter congratulations Buddy
You would not see scenes like this in any other professional sport in the world. Phenomenal.
Had this up in split screen with the test match victory in Pakistan happening almost simultaneously. What a night.
Don’t think I’ll ever get over him leaving Hawthorn. Happy for him though.
For those not aware, this is something that may never happen again (especially with the modern playing style). In 125 years of the competition, he is only the 6th in history to reach the 1,000 goal milestone. The running on the field is a tradition for 1,000 total goals or 100 in a single season (which Franklin has achieved before in 2008).
Some real r/killthecameraman shit going on for the set shot.
But to contextualise this for non-Australians. Elite AFL forwards in the modern game should kick anywhere from 50 – 80 goals per season. To hit 1,000, you need to be doing that every year for 12 – 20 years; which would have you in your mid-late 30’s by the time it’s happened.
Franklin is 35, and basically missed his whole 2020 season as well. He’s the AFL equivalent of LeBron. An absolute champion.
Unreal that it happened in Sydney too. Incredible scenes
The swarm of people! I’ve never seen anything like it.
The overhead footage of the swarm of people is just insane, I don’t think even the biggest sporting events in the world have caused the crowd to swarm the ground.
Once in a lifetime thing.
Never again will something like this be seen in the AFL
BUD
Unreal. Dunno about anyone else but fuck that would make me claustrophobic. Id end up having a panic attack being that crowded/stuffed in.
Yeah he did, everyone was in good spirits, and he said right after that was a moment he’ll cherish forever
What an incredible event to watch live here in Australia. The game was not even over yet but they certainly got an extra break in play.
This will probably never happen again based on the way AFL is now played. The last person before him to do it retired before Buddy Franklin debuted.
For those not too familiar with Aussie rules asking why it’ll be the last player to likely ever kick 1000 goals again, modern football is a different game, big forwards don’t kick 6-7 goals a game, they kick 2-3 and work up the ground, some ruck etc.
Paul Blart must have been heading security tonight.
Genuinely a part of Australian history.
I still remember seeing Plugger’s record in 1999 on the TV as a kid and it’s crazy to see something like this all these years later at the SCG again. Absolute star.
Some cunt also stole the match ball guarantee they will try and sell it to him for big cash
Holy cow, I didn’t realize how recent this is. I thought this was a highlight (Edit: from something awhile ago).
It’s 4am here in Alaska, but even as a Dockers fan, this was a gosh dang amazing moment.
For context for nonAustralians: this is unusual
I heard Selwood ducked right outta there
