Kyler Murray’s ‘study hall’ clause is so unorthodox that not a single executive or coach reached by Yahoo Sports could recall ever even hearing of that kind of language inserted into such a high-profile deal.

Just imagine having to put that language in a contract yet still paying him what they did. There are serious doubt about his dedication.
Thanks for the twitter link that links to yahoo.
Save a click, he’s required to “study” the other team 4 hours a week with zero distraction ex; video games/tv. Article makes a big deal no one else is obligated and seems a sure sign he’s not committed
This is so going to be a Jamarcus Russell 2.0, isn’t it ?
I’m shocked that none of the younger guys have this in their contracts. 4hrs/week is nothing for what they get paid.
These contracts are bigger than they ever have been, so I’m not surprised there are more and more responsibilities being spelled out for the athletes who are signing them (re: this won’t be the last time we’ll hear about a ‘study hall’ type contingency).
It’s because the dude doesn’t put in the mental work. He admits it. They gritted their teeth when they gave him that deal.
This kids gonna be big no day.
The “Jamarcus” clause?
Does anybody else think 4 hours a week, just doesn’t seem to be nearly enough.
I’m shocked that *at least an hour per day* of independent study isn’t just assumed as necessary to keep up for a professional athlete at that level. What is Kyler doing all day?
Like others have said, this looks bad on both parties
Put down the controller and at least pretend to earn 8 figures
This clause should of been in Jamarcus Russell’s contract!
Shit I know some middle school teachers that watch more NFL film a week than that.
Does he also get nap time?
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what an average weekly schedule for a QB would look like? Both in terms of total hours at “work” and activities contributing to that time.
As a grad student, my contract with my university divides up my time specifically to what I should be doing (25 hours to teaching/research assistant duties, 10 to dissertation, 5 for research). But to be a “great” grad student absolutely requires at least double the time for my dissertation as well my personal research to give myself a shot at a good job, and I had the same experience with contracts in work before entering grad school.
Given the value of the contract and I’m sure some of the complexity of that, I wondered if maybe they’re just specifying a specific time allotment for contractual terms knowing he’ll need to invest more time. Obviously being an NFL QB isn’t your average 40 hour work week job and maybe it is solely about his commitment, but job duties being specified in a contract isn’t as radical as this article seems to imply in my eyes.
Kyler Murray is a damn good football player, but as a Cardinals fan this makes me concerned about his commitment to the game and his team.
If you have to put dedication to his craft in his contract, maybe don’t sign him?
Don’t they know you need to study about 1 hour for every credit you take.
The question I have is who made the decision to make it public. I can’t see how that decision makes anyone look good.
Didn’t Dez Bryant have a curfew in his contract?
Hell, I used to put in almost 5 hours a week when I was 12 watching game film and shooter tendencies when I was playing hockey.
Kid’s missing a nut somewhere if he thinks he’ll be a star without putting in the mental work.
Talking bout practice??
He must have ignored their request to study the last 4 years so they had to do something. Sad that he wasn’t professional enough to want to do it on his own. It’s a bad look on Murray and a desperate one for the Cards.
He’s a child
Is he that hardheaded about watching film? Didn’t Brady say recently he loves watching 4-5 hours of film a day?
Or the Cardinals are trying to poison the well so other teams don’t try to poach their very dedicated and studious QB, while also leading opponents’ defenses to underestimate their own need to prepare 🤯
Okay? It’s unorthodox, sure, but it’s still an agreement and all the terms are negotiable. If they’re paying the dude a shit ton of money and their biggest concern is he won’t put in the time off the field, why not add stipulations about it? Should they just gamble and maybe throw away a hundred million when they could add another paragraph to the contract and solve all the problems? Like who cares… it works for both sides. Drop it.
Good lord this is bizarre
How do they plan on verifying this?
I agree with the unnamed exec in the piece: if you had these type of doubts, WHY IN THE HELL DID YOU SIGN HIM TO AN UNGODLY CONTRACT?!?!
This dude hung upside down for hours at a time before the draft to try and make himself taller.
Is this like a professional IEP?
How did his agent even allow this to be included? That’s the real story here
That’s something Jamarcus Russel should have had in his contract.
Glad we’re saddled with this guy. Who doesn’t want a QB that has “giving a shit” stipulated in his contract. I kind of wish he would have bolted to MLB when we drafted him.
At least Rosen just failed through lack of ability.
