I remember the first time watching this movie I was so serious about turning into the star child. I want to be an omnipresent fetus in a bubble floating thru space.
Do you think the subtext of their relationship was that they were lovers? I mean, all of their colleagues were in a deep freeze. So no one except HAL would really know what was going on.
The way space exterior shots were completely silent was masterful: it emphasized the indifference of the universe while providing great contrast to the interiors.
Always hoped that Space Stations would go the way of this movie ( also Wernher von Braun’s concept), that is, spinning wheels to provide artificial gravity. Considering how debilitated astronauts are after weeks or months in space on their return to Earth, I can’t fathom that astronauts on a long trip to Mars could function very well once they arrived.
The attention to detail in these suits was astounding. Things one may not notice during the film. The neck seals to keep breathable gas in the helmet, and some of the labeling on then chest plate. Costuming was paying close attention here.
Red is sus

“Open the pod bay doors Hal”
Great movie. In high-school we had to figure out the filming techniques for that movie.
Just rewatched this a few days ago. It’s surprising how well it stands up.

Plus cheaper!
They look so happy. Wonder if this is the 750 picture taken with that pose, but slighlty more happier then 432th picture taken, by Kubrick.
Great movie. The perfect example of “show, don’t tell”.
“My God, it’s full of stars!” ⬛️….👤
One year later, the Apollo 11 Mission put three men on the surface of the Moon. How curious this world is.
