Opinion: Live at San Quentin is a better album than Live at Folsom Prison. He does three brand new songs and they’re all brilliant; San Quentin, I Don’t Know Where I’m Bound, and A Boy Named Sue.
I like to imagine hes thinking about how important this show is to the prisoners. Such a rarity to be treated like a person by someone from the free world. He fucks this up, he ruins these peoples only good day in a long time.
At this moment, Johnny Cash is near the pinnacle of country music; he’s cleaned up and his next album is likely to sell widely, meaning he can lock in his brand for mainstream consumption. The label is ready to pour resources into any project he likes. Any songwriter, any backing band — call your shot, Johnny.
He decides to play a live show for a bunch of screaming felons.
Edit: y’all think I’m criticizing that man. I am not.
I don’t know if it was this or San Quentin, but one of the two, Merle Haggard later told Johnny that he was there. Johnny said, “I didn’t see you on the roster.”
Merle replied, “I wasn’t on the roster. I was in the audience.”
There’s a big trail in Folsom that starts in the historic Folsom area and ends in the prison parking lot. It’s called the Jonny Cash Trail. a portion of it cuts through prison property and you’re allowed to walk or ride on it, so long as you don’t go off trail. Kinda hard to do that accidentally though as there’s a fence with barbed wire that clearly tells you where you can go and where you can’t. It’s a wonderful trail, great fun to ride on. There’s also a museum.
Classic man in black.
Give him a minute. Johnny Cash needs to think about his entire life before he plays.
John Cash is a legend.
I don’t understand why people like his music. I’m just fucking with you Johnny Cash is the Johnny Cash of Johnny Cash
Fun Fact: Johnny Cash was probably the first American (in America) who got to know about Jossif Stalin’s death.
“These men have reception, Ned Block – 850362, and Matt Sheldon – 839879. They have reception…”
*unintelligible*
“Yeah, I doubt that! Hahaha”
Johnny Cash has to think about his whole life before he plays.
One of the best concerts ever!

I have to say, the composition of this photo is pretty incredible.
The colors, the textures, his outfit, his pose, the cigarette, all iconic.
I wonder if he knew, at this point, what an amazing show he was about to put on?
Makes me want to go out and get a black suit. But I know I could never rock it like that!
He never paid for drugs. Not even once!
That man was so fucking cool.

Been watching Ken Burn’s “Country Music” episodes. Johnny Cash is featured on it of course. Great documentary.
Any idea who the photographer was? This is an amazing shot
Here’s one for your warden!
Johnny was cooler than Elvis and Elvis was the coolest. Great time for R&R!

Am i the only one who thinks that, if you think of his right arm as fleece or fur, it looks like the bar goes through it?
Why is the video footage still unavailable?
I cared for Johnny Cash in the hospital. He was a genuinly nice guy. We talked for hours.
The next “coolest “ guy 1 under ELVIS!!!
Damn, I love a tailored suit jacket with a snazzy silk lining. This dude could dress.
In 1968 he was 36 years old, only 4 years older than me now. But somehow he looks like he’s in his 40s and I look like I’m in my 20s.
