  • A nice atmosphere for this early photo of John. John Mellencamp released six albums (those prior to 1982) under the name John (or Johnny ) Cougar, under advice from his management company “Mainman,” run by David Bowie’s one-time manager, Tony DeFries.

He later went by the name “John Cougar Mellencamp,” releasing recordings through 1989’s, “Big Daddy.” These included some of his biggest successes during the 1980’s.

He later simply used his given name, John Mellencamp, starting with his 11th-released album, “Whatever We Wanted,” in 1991.
