Jimmy Buffett and Fisher family and friends, July 20, 1982.
Full disclosure: I’m from Key West, FL, and we have a love-love relationship with Jimmy Buffett aka Bubba. Ask anyone from Key West how they feel about our rum-flavored patron saint Buffett. Ask anyone in the state who grew up there. Jimmy Buffett was as human as any of us and understood that. He left us a body of work to explore. And despite any argument about liking him or not (or worse) he is to contemporary Key West what Bob Marley is to Jamaica and Sinead O’Connor is to Ireland.
And he was really there, man. As long as any of us are alive who are going to be at his second-line tomorrow in Key West, he always will be. Love him or leave him, it’s both love either way to me, Jimmy Buffet abides. And it’s photos like this that proves it. Likely taken by Carol O’ Shaunnessy.
He died too young :/
I wanted to watch one of his concerts, but now I’ll never get to :/
I’ll have a cheeseburger and a margarita tomorrow in his honor 🙂
I was there with my parents on vacation and stumbled upon the Mel Fisher and his crew while the were bringing things from their boat across the dock and into their truck. Mel gave me a handful of silver oxide (I think that’s what it’s called). I didn’t know the importance of that handful until later that night when I saw the news. Crazy that I was right there and he made a young kid happy like that.
Did they let Mel finally keep the treasure? Rip Jimmy!!
I remember seeing the display in a jewelry store as a kid, and my mother telling me the story of the Atocha and its treasure recovery. I had no idea about how much money it actually was worth, because you just don’t know how much it really was when you’re a kid.
So, thanks for the good double memory. I’ll have to have a marg tomorrow night for Labour Day. Cheers to you and Jimmy. 🍹

TIL of such a treasure
The One Piece Is Real!
I’ve held one of those silver bars
Wow
Today’s the day!
Mel also died at 76. Interesting
I have two of those coins from the Atocha.
TIL who Mel Fisher was. Seemed like an interesting person, to say the least.
My dad is in this photo, he worked for Mel Fisher and used to tell me stories about how Jimmy Buffet was always around after they had towed him in when his boat broke down.
My dad passed a couple months ago, I cannot believe this picture is on Reddit.
I feel like inserting Jimmy Buffett into historical events should be a thing.

RIP Jimmy. All of Key West must be in mourning. I love that place.
“In 1622, a ship called the Nuestra Señora de Atocha sank in a hurricane—with a 6.25-carat emerald, among many other treasures, on board. Soon, that emerald will be sold at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction, where it is expected to fetch between $50,000 and $70,000.
The Atocha was a vessel commissioned to support Spanish colonization, and it was returning from an expedition in Havana when it ran into the hurricane and sank. Another vessel, the Santa Margarita, met the same fate. The ships remained underwater near what is now Florida for over 300 years.
In the 1960s, treasure hunter Mel Fisher discovered the Santa Margarita near Florida’s coast. Finally, in 1985, Fisher and his team of treasure hunters uncovered the main hull of the Atocha—and with it, a trove of valuables. In addition to 70 pounds of Colombian emeralds, the ship contained 180,000 silver coins, 24 tons of Bolivian silver, 125 gold bars and a collection of Venezuelan pearls”
I love that all the way out in key west, there’s still Seattle Seahawks fans (blue shirt guy)
Shoutout to the Seattle Seahawks!!
Oh sure, he could find $750 million in gold at the bottom of the ocean, but he couldn’t find that lost shaker of salt.
Classic Jimmy Buffet, playin music, no worries!! RIP, you’ll truly be missed!❤️
Keepin it classy! Bud in a champagne glass!!!
We really need to bring back 70s men shorts. Ain’t nothing wrong with wearing something more comfortable for moving around.
Jimmy Buffet….like the Margaritaville?
