I loved him so much. Did he make anyone else feel kind of sad and protective toward him? I don’t remember the plot of the summer camp movie but I remember it giving me a little bit of sadness.
My oldest daughter asked for a camping themed party for her 10th birthday, so I threw on Ernest Goes to Camp at the end of the night to wind everyone down and they loved it!
I got to meet him when I was around that age and around that time period. We got to share a box with him and some other people at a monster truck thing. I just remember him as being exactly as entertaining as I would have hoped. I wish I had a picture.
I love this guy. I grew up watching his movies. Later on I started looking him up and was surprised to find out he was actually a really smart man. High IQ, would quote Shakespeare and did a lot of stuff on stage. If you look at “normal” pictures of him he’s actually a really handsome man (hard to see it when all you’ve really seen is his goofy face). Awesomely deep regular speaking voice.
Ernest/Jim Varney holds a special place in my heart. My first cousin and I loved Ernest movies as a kid. Once we got grown, he moved away. He moved back about 9 years ago. We hung out alot and we grew very close. Alot of times when we hung out, we would put on Ernest and go on a nostalgia trip and laugh our asses off. Unfortunately he committed suicide in ’16, but I cherish those memories and laughs we had both as kids and adults watching Ernest.
Jim was my absolute hero in the 80s and early 90s. I saw Ernest Saves Christmas in the theatre when I was 8. My dad sat through it with me and I swear he enjoyed it as much as I did.
What a great man he was. Free of scandals IRL and just loved delivering wholesome family entertainment.

I loved Ernest! Tried to watch it with my kids a few years ago. Sadly, it wasn’t nearly as funny as I remembered.
You know what I mean Verne?
You have my envy!
Are either of you Vern?

Close it down. This is the coolest thing that will ever be shared on this sub.

My dad would take us to the theater to see his movies. One of the wholesome parts of my life. So cool you got to meet him. Was he nice?
Ernest Saves Christmas was the very first movie that I saw at a cinema.
As someone who had and still has an irrational love for Christmas, he was a hero to me.

I just learned he was the voice of Slinky Dog in the first 2 Toy Story movies 🤯

That is a genuine smile by Jim/Ernest. I’m sure that made your day/life!
I kinda miss the 90s when celebrities could make mall appearances, and it wasn’t a freaking circus
