You mean: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Don’t forget the Old Blue Eye.
I remember this and my Dad trying to explain why this was significant, at least to him. They hadn’t spoken in over 20 years.
The amount of affection being shown between men!
When you think about all the pieces here – smoking on live TV, Dean clearly sauced, raising money for muscular dystrophy, the 3 biggest stars of their day getting together for the first time in 20 years. 47 years is a long time ago, but not.
I wonder how many cigs Dean would light, take a drag and then just use it as an accessory.
Grew up on Dean Martin, always playing at my grandparents. The amount of nostalgia his voice brings me is remarkable.
Surprise line
“It should have been the Jew…”
Jerry and Dean became famous as a comedy duo and had a bunch of very successful movies together. Jerry was the funny guy and Dean his side-kick.
When Dean ended their partnership in 1956 because he felt he should pursue a solo career the common perception was that Dean would never make it without Jerry.
Fast forward 10 years. By the mid-1960s, Martin was a movie, recording, television, and nightclub star and Jerry’s solo career somehow never took him to the heights he reached with Dean as his partner.
I remember watching this every year as a kid. And, then I grew up and wondered, “did they cure Muscular Dystrophy with the billions of dollars they recieved?”

I remember watching this and it was a big deal. Front page news.
Unless you are old enough you will not understand how popular this telethon was and how many people watched it.
Dean Martin well reported rarely drank. Part of the act. Apple Juice.
I particularly enjoyed how Jerry Lewis immediately became “Jerry Lewis.”
Great clip. Thanks OP.
I swear this video pops up here once a week
When antisemitic drunks were celebrated
my mom told me as a kid the wives where fighting lol she followed all that crap back in the day
I remember this being a big deal at the time. They really despised each other.
Never liked. Jerry Lewis. Two assholes on TV
The telethon weekend always made me melancholy as a kid. Typically school started the day after for me, as well as my birthday being on the 8th of sept.
I read somewhere that muscular distrophy is a genetic disorder and can be fixed, along with some other dibilitating ‘diseases’ but since they were wildly sucessful at collecting money, they go on begging.
Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin were a popular American comedy and musical duo in the 1940s and 1950s, known for their slapstick humor and chemistry on stage and screen. Despite their success, the partnership eventually soured, leading to a publicized feud.
The root of their feud was multifaceted and stemmed from a variety of issues:
1. **Professional Tension**: As their careers progressed, there were creative and professional tensions between the two. Lewis was more focused on expanding his comedic talents and gaining more control over their projects, while Martin was interested in pursuing a serious singing and acting career. Their differing ambitions created friction.
2. **Imbalance of Fame**: Initially, Martin was the more famous of the two, but as time went on, Lewis’s popularity surged, and he began to receive more attention from fans and the media. This shift created an imbalance and caused resentment.
3. **Personal Differences**: They had very different personalities. Martin was laid-back and enjoyed a partying lifestyle, while Lewis was more intense and focused on his work. These differences led to clashes behind the scenes.
4. **Exhaustion**: Their schedule was incredibly grueling, with constant touring, film making, and television appearances. The workload and stress contributed to the deterioration of their relationship.
Their partnership officially ended in 1956, and they did not speak to each other for several years. However, they eventually reconciled in the late 1980s, facilitated by mutual friend Frank Sinatra during a live telethon. After this public reconciliation, they maintained a friendly relationship until Martin’s death in 1995. Despite their differences and the years of estrangement, both Lewis and Martin spoke fondly of each other in their later years, reflecting on the success and happiness they found during their time as a duo.
Dean didn’t drink…. He just pretended. That was his gig….

So awkward. Jerry was shitty to Dean, he deserved better.
I miss those days. Life seemed simpler.

I’m not old, but my favorite artist is Dean Martin. I love the Ratpack and a bunch of music like crooning, jazz, big band, and so on from that era. They don’t make ’em like they used to!
This was such a wonderful moment
Am I the only one excited by the casual flirtation?
Where was the third member ? Sammy Davis jr?
I have muscular dystrophy I miss fund raisers
For a second there I thought the were doing Blackface…
Three stinky dudes
I never missed the Telethon. Jerry was a lot of things, but he had a passion for those with MD. I remember watching this live. Very touching reunion, and it rang the registers. And yeah, Dean Martin’s drunkenness was a schtick…
Judging by the body language of Lewis he didn’t think it was time
I’d watch this every Labour Day weekend through out the late 70’s early 80’s. I always looked so forward to it.
These men had it all back then.
In my childhood in the 60’s and 70’s the MD telethon was one of the seminal annual events: as big as any sporting event or election. It was a huge, huge deal.
I don’t think you could run it today as they did then. I went out a couple of yrs in a row knocking on doors to raise money. Today there is a certain element in society that would shoot you for walking on their property, and generally public trust in doorway campaigns is long gone.
As an aside, look at how well dressed these 3 men are: formal attire and completely comfortable.
I remember watching that every year for Labor Day weekend
When tv was simple and limited that you even watched Jerry Lewis’ marathon waiting for performers
Probably no bigger Dickhead than Jerry Lewis. Just ask his family.
This was the best. I really miss these real, true performers. Not some fool dancing around in his underwear in front of a green screen.
not Dean Martin That’s Frank Sinatra!
The two Italians got ’em. hah
SAD.
So cringe seeing how common homophobia was back then. It’s like watching old clips of Don Rickles joking about Black people. So glad we have grown up just a bit.
That’s a lot of man-kissing
Why the strange cut after Frank grabs Dean’s ass? Dean’s wearing glasses suddenly, so something is missing.
Wow! 3 greats on the telethon!
