I find it fascinating they are posing with their servants as if they were part of the family. I am not sure it was very common (I would be very happy to be proven wrong). Also the black guy absolutely does not look like a servant with his nice suit and hat, especially considering it is the same kind of hat that Tolkien father is wearing. They look more like peers than master and servant.
FYI Tolkien was born in South Africa
