Inside the Uvalde Response (full documentary) | FRONTLINE

  • I watched this and it is eye-opening. I can see how the individual officers at the scene didn’t do much for 70+ minutes. It is not for a given officer to run in, guns blazing. Especially in a school.

    The failure was complete incompetence from those in charge to have trained officers (and themselves) to deal with this and to establish a quick command and control for what was happening and direct an appropriate response.

    Make no mistake, there were colossal fuck-ups with this to be sure. I just think the problems come from the top down and not the bottom up.

  • There is one Uvalde cop, Officer Jesus Mendoza, that is very honest during his interview. I think what he has to say reveals a lot about how police actually feel about the risks they are supposed to take as part of their job. Video with timestamp:

    >”We know we need to get in there but we don’t have the right equipment. You know I didn’t even bother to throw on my rifle plates at all. Like I said, we didn’t have any shield. No flashbangs, no nothing that we could’ve used to create a distraction to not only, not to sound selfish but, make sure we go home at the end of the day but at least more of these kids can go home at the end of the day, you know. I understand this is the job we signed up for, yeah we put our lives on the line but none of us have never been in this type of situation. None of us ever thought any of this situation would ever happen here.”

    lol the Uvalde cops are some real big brave boys

    The last thing he says in the documentary also reveals how they probably truly feel deep down

    >”The more we talk, like…(long pause)…it sounds like we fucking didn’t do shit right?”

    You think?

  • This certainly goes against the “cops were cowards” bit.

    * teachers and students trained to hide and stay quiet
    * cops don’t hear any noise, assume students aren’t in school today
    * suspect very aggressive, room is dark, cops get grazed by bullets
    * guess we wait for the cavalry
    * meanwhile, students actually are in room, bleeding out

    edit

    * oh wait, they realized the kids were there after about 20 minutes
    * we could storm the room but we dont’ want to get shot
    * ok they were cowards
