Speaking of good old country, here is someone everyone should hear, Townes Van Zandt. He is one of, if not my favorite, songwriters. I’ve been writing songs myself for 20 years and he is the main reason I wanted to write. This song will make you cry.
Like any genre, there are many sub-genres. There used to be a lot of bluesy songs. Like the whole stereotype of songs about loss (What happens if you play a country song backwards? You get your wife, your dog, and your truck back). Modern country falls into 2 basic buckets, ultra-patriotic pro-military/authority/maga type stuff and the pop/hip-hop type stuff.
Many blame 9/11 for the rise of the ultra patriotic stuff. Feel good stuff took off right after in many genres. But country seemed to really lean into the pro-America stuff. The pop/hip hop stuff is just because that’s what makes money in any genre. So as country got bigger, it naturally leaned into generic stuff that more people can relate too. So its generic and boring as shit, but an easy listen.
You hate bad country music. There’s a lot more of bad in modern music of all genres, because time didn’t have the chance to sort it out yet.
Check out the Ken Burns country music documentary series. There is a variety of sub-genres and eras to check out. Non modern country can be very fun.
Stole this from another comment: Modern country is just pop music with an accent.
Country music is storytelling. Modern country is pop
