This is really awesome, but I do believe we’re going to get to some Gattaca level shit eventually because of it. No one is going to be upset about correcting genetic defects, but eventually, the line between defect and non-optimal will start getting blurry. After all, if you’re correcting things like this, what about diabetes and heart disease? Eventually, you get to more problematic questions like: Why not make people a little taller? A little more intelligent?
If you told most parents that they could spend money to ensure their child would have every genetic advantage, you can bet they’d do it if they could afford it.

If so, I find it interesting that (near the end, regarding longevity research funding), the talking point of the “public good” of longevity, which is possibly the most controversial aspect about it, was the most glossed over as “obvious.”
Possibilities that make the “public good” of longevity research less obvious:
* Increased inequality between those who can afford longevity therapies, and those who cannot.
* slower cultural turnover as the elderly remain in power longer
* overpopulation
These kinds of changes aren’t passed genetically, right? Or can this man assume his genes will be transferred to his progeny?
So there must be a reason why the body transitions away from making fetal hemoglobin. So what are the long term repercussions of this?
