My Grandfather was an ice man in the 20’s in N.Y.C. My Mother told me he had a girlfriend on every block.

My dad grew up in this era. We even had an antique old ice box in our house, which he loved. He really romanticized these guys because, he said, it was really hard work and they were the biggest, strongest guys around. There was nothing that built strength more than hauling heavy blocks of ice from truck to apartments all day long. Lots of stair work.
