The old developers knew about the limitations of CRT screens and made the games for them. It’s why old games always look better on CRT monitors, transparency effects smooth avatars, better looking and varied sprites and effects. They designed the pixels in a way to make them look smooth and make some amazing effects like see through waterfalls with tricks that cathode ray tubes did by design. It’s an incredible feat of programming and art.
That’s why modern Pixel games are nowhere near the quality of the old stuff. People do it now by choice, as a style for their game, it was never a choice back then. They had to use that because they were limited by it, none of them wanted blocky characters so they were able to work around that using the technology of the time.
Really comes down to the camera settings. Lower the ISO and slow down the shutter speed until you are getting an image with less glow.
