Man those were the days ! I’d head to Micky’s for French bread pizza , camp out at 2nd st, skate the strand , boogie board and ride my strand cruiser back over 190th daily !
My grandma had a place in Manhattan Beach and I spent weekends and summers burning my little redheaded butt at the beach. I can smell this picture. Leaded gasoline, spray from the ocean, Sun In shampoo and Coppertone 🤘😎 I definitely loved being in LA as a kid growing up.
Moved to SoCal and got an apartment in North Redondo in 1984. Used to ride my bike down Pier Avenue and on the beach bike path. Stop in Hennessy’s for a beer on the way home. Where has time gone?
I had an apartment there in 1987. $800/mo for two bedrooms. Wonderful days. You really had to twist yourself into a pretzel to see the ocean, but it was doable. I doubt Hermosa is even close to what it was then. 💔💔💔
Slowly, all the southern california beach areas have lost their quirky storefronts and homespun individuality and become homogenized and impersonal. There are a few shops and restaurants that still hang tough, but it just seems like a matter of time before they’re edged out by the whatever new Starbucks-type corporate cancer swallows them up too.
What a wonderful place California must have been during that time! I truly envy those that had the opportunity to grow up there during the 70’s and 80’s.
Everyone was in so much better shape back then, and I don’t mean they all had six packs,
but it was really unusual to see anyone obese or even just overweight.
I grew up in Hermosa Beach, and you’re right it’s very cool during those years we really had something we didn’t realize until you get older, and how things have changed down there. Yeah I was born in Manhattan moved to Hermosa 1960, went to high school at Miracosta graduated in the 72 and the funniest thing. I remember is cruising night down Hermosa Avenue sitting down at 22nd St. with your thumb out and picking up chicks and going to parties. Life was simple then believe me. RL
Was in San Diego during the 70’s as a kid. Skateboarding, sailing, bike-riding over to Ocean Beach, while rocking my I ❤ San Diego t-shirts and listening to Fleetwood Mac. It was an ideal childhood. I still close my eyes to remember those days.
Funny how Hermosa, in the 70s, was just a bohemian hang-out. same with Redondo, Manhattan, etc. Now it’s become a playground for the ultra-rich, ultra-niche one-percenters. Still a fun place to hang out, though.

Cool roller skates.
I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Cove Theater in Hermosa Beach in 1979.
Oh wow, are those Vans roller skates?
Look’s like they’re parked outside the Lighthouse Bar. Killer Zucchini Parmesan and local bands!
I love everything about this!! Anybody got the 411 on the vehicle??
My wife grew up in redondo. She is 64. Mid 70’s were her heyday. Weed, surfing, windowless vans. The whole shebang. She had a blast.
look at that car. wtf is that?
Pier ave.
I was born in a house on 31st street, ‘79.
Shout out to Boccados
I can smell the incense and surf wax
Witch one is you

So thankful for this pic and memories

I lived in Hermosa from 85-95 then moved to south Redondo. Used to be an awesome middle class and affordable area. No more though.
Looking back, probably one of the best generations. Best times to be young.
Before aids, crack, condoms, before Jerry Springer and MTV, long before social media. A basic job could afford you a house and a life.
Who knew it was our high water mark.
Now that is old school cool
Lived in Hermosa also in the late 70s but I was only 2 years old then.
If that car was your only ride out of there, you’re probably still there! Lol!
I was there then too!! I was 7 tho. Lol
I was in Westchester Ca back then.
Were you able to catch a Black Flag show with Keith Morris on vocals?
did you close your eyes when you’d drive back then too??

That vehicle looks like it’s held together with duct tape and baling wire.
That elcamino is pretty rough.
Focus really far in and you can see the Either/Or Bookstore. God, I miss that place.
Those 3 are quite stunning. What an amazing picture.

I was there summer of ‘75. Good times.

That car has seen better days
You probably won’t believe me, but that girl is 14 or 15. I was 11, and she looks like one of the “big kids” from high school that I had a crush on.
What a wonderful place California must have been during that time! I truly envy those that had the opportunity to grow up there during the 70’s and 80’s.
Now half of you have moved to my state!
