  • There is a huge “storyline”, or more like lore, available on youtube. Mostly ~1 hour videos because its so much story.

As for the games, the games are all standalone experiences set in the Warhammer universe. Some are shooters, some are tactical RPGs, some are strategy games, etc.

The games often pit the Space Marines against one of humanities enemies like Tyranids

  • If you’ve got a PC you gotta start with Dawn of War… ALL OF THEM (1, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, Soulstorm, 2+DLC, Retribution) You can skip 3. Then you’ve got Gothic Armada 1 and 2. Spacemarine is also good. An upcoming RPG called “Rogue Trader” is in the works and will be released soon! Welcome to the 40k community!

  • 40K has a massive timeline that you can spend hours reading/watching if you want to. Most games set in the universe are usually stand-alone stories. There may be some cross overs and familiar faces here-and-there, but nothing I can think of that *requires* you to know the greater story.

Obviously sequels and expansions are better played after their previous entries. But apart from that you can pretty much start anywhere. The main things to remember about the setting are that everyone is having a terrible time (except maybe the Orks) and there are no good guys.

Boltgun, Dawn of War 1 & 2 (and their expansions), Necromunda: Hired Gun, Space Marine, Mechanicus, and Battlefleet Gothic: Armarda 1 & 2 are all great games imo.
