So I’ve never played the Half-Life series. Was HL2 left on a cliffhanger or was the story able to be left there and people just memed it to meme it?

Half-Life series was my first experience with “episodic” games. Made me wary of all other game companies trying such a model, and they seem to fail to keep producing new entries too.
I hate the part of me that still has hope for HL3, its a fucking dead end.

I still love that fact that Gabe hand delivered Steam Decks and a lot of the early adopters weren’t home. I can’t even contemplate hearing from my mom “Hey that thing you ordered is here. It was hand delivered by some guy named Gabe.”.
After this picture, Gaben actually showed them the alpha version of Half-Life 3. It was utterly perfect in every way, it brought the story to a satisfying conclusion when the G-Man >!starts demanding payment for his services!< and is revealed to be >!actually about 500 feet tall crustacean from the paleolithic era.!< The final scene is Gordon defeating and rebuking the G-Man, telling him >!”Goddamn you Loch Ness monster, I ain’t got no tree fiddy!”!<
Unfortunately, these poor boys were never seen after this incident. There are rumors that they were eaten, but those rumors have yet to be substantiated as they do not appear to be made of Tasty Kake pastries.

It’s so crazy to me in this era of companies desperately mining their old IP for content that Valve is like nah we just let properties like L4D and HL lie fallow for years so we can do other random stuff.
That said Alyx was dope af. I was not prepared for how good it was. Blows me away that still, today, it’s easily the best VR game ever made, 3 years later.

One could argue the HL3 Joke is dead by now. Because the Half Life Series always had a focus on some innovation. And while Half Life Alyx wasn’t named Half Life 3 I think it is fair to count it as the entry for Half Life 3.
Some day in the future, The Gaben will be gone and his successor (or perhaps a board of directors) will be running the company. They will recognize the HL3 comeback as having huge earning potential and will devote considerable resources to develop this masterpiece.
It will be a huge steaming pile of shit.
