Interesting how the population is enjoying the beach like it‘s any other, not worrying about the industry behind them.
Obviously this is before people were worried about pollution and other related things. The ‟Golden Age” of industry…
Oil rigs?
funny thing is there are stil tons of oil dereks and offshore platforms at HB so its not really any better, just maybe not as much of an eyesore.i remember when they found some serious contamination there and refused to close the beach, also it was the first time they tested for this contaminate so who knows how long people were exposed to it.
It’s weird that there are no cops beating teens with batons to an 80s punk soundtrack in this photo.
When I visited HB in 2013-ish, I was quite let down by the fact that offshore rigs were visible from the beach. Really takes away from the beauty of the place.
#I. DRINK. YOUR. MILKSHAKE.
Let me preface this: I absolutely think we should be putting the majority of our collective mental energy towards just energy transition away from fossil fuels. In fact I work on developing climate change solutions (DAC, alternative meats, you name it). I am also as “blue” as you can get.
However, I do think its funny when my current California’s absolutely vilify the O&G industry. Many old money Californian’s can attribute said wealth directly to O&G (hell, Gavin Newsom’s father worked for fucking Union Oil). If you REALLY felt so bad about it, maybe sell Grandpa’s beach house he bought with oil money and donate the proceeds to climate change initiatives?
Be careful where you cast stones.
When I was a kid, I lived in Dubai. We would sometimes go to the beach. The best beaches were on the east coast (Fujeira) on the Indian Ocean.
You could see the line of oil tankers waiting to cross the Straits of Hormuz on the horizon. It was also typical to end up with a small amount of tar stuck to your feet, we would have to remove it with acetone after coming home.
Cancer free still, touch wood.
I can feel the tar on my feet. I remember growing up in the 70s in Ventura County – every time we went to the beach we came home straight into the garage to use turpentine to get the thick black goo cleaned off.
I know i have read that LA has disguised oil drilling rigs that look like regular buildings and homes. Not sure if it is also the case in Huntington Beach (do you guys consider that a suburb of LA? like how tempe and mesa are all part of phoenix?)
Until December of 2020, there were as many as 19 active oil wells on and/or immediately adjacent to Beverly Hills High School.

camon this is sick
I was born in Southern California in the early 70s, and went to the beach often. I remember always coming home with oil/ tar stuck to the bottom of my feet, it was expected.
Holy shit!!! Oil rigs no thanks that’s crazy how many and in Huntington Beach wow
