I haven’t thought about this musician in forever. It’s pretty great he’s still out there doing his thing!
My parents had the “Whipped Cream and other Delights” album in The 1960’s. I spent a week with the mumps laying under a coffee table with my suitcase record player, and grooving to all this coolness. Great guy. Plus the album cover was so titillating!
This is one of my all time favorites.
There’s a great story behind this tune too. Herb wanted to do a vocal track on that album. “There’s a question I always ask great writers that I asked Burt that day over the phone. ‘Is there a song you have tucked away in your drawer or someplace or a song that didn’t get the right recording that you find yourself whistling in the shower?’ And he sent me ‘This Girl’s in Love with You.’
Awesome post, and thanks for the ride in the way back machine.
I remember seeing this live on teevee
The same one with the Tiguana Brass?
Faith No More’s version is pretty fly too.
His mother was a customer of mine at Wells Fargo Bank in Beverly Hills. A DARLING lady. She was so proud of her son…
the guy who does the Hit Parade podcast told the story of Herb’s first hits. Essentially he recorded the songs himself and because of the sound of the music he was making he tacked on ‘and the Tijuana Brass.’ When the songs got big he then had to put together the Tijuana Brass for the tour.
Also the ‘A’ in A&M Records.
I was just a little boy but I loved Zorba the Greek!
There’s a great documentary on him called “Herb Alpert Is…”. A fascinating artist.
And didn’t he marry the girl from Brazil ‘66? Love that bossa nova sound!
College age for me back in 1971, but my Mom and I both enjoyed his music, starting in the 1960’s. I still recall the fantastic sound from the 8-track tape deck in her early Mustang, really sounding like “surround sound”!
I just saw him ànd Lani peform in Denver a month ago. It was pretty great.
This song was #1 the week of my birthday.
Herb Albert – Rise comes to mind.
An icon.
Casino Royale is still one of the best songs he did. And one of Biggie’s best songs sampled Herb. He and Jerry Moss launched so many influential artists.
There’s a really great cover version of this song by Fastball that was on a compilation CD called Lounge-A-Palooza, which has a lot of other great covers, as well.
I used to listen to my parents Album as a kid and I fell in love with him. He’s so talented and sooo good looking.. didn’t know he was still alive. Would love see him in person.
Here’s the reason I played the trumpet.
The version of Jane Monheit is very good to.
