Headstone of VietNam vet Sgt Leonard Matlovich. He left his name off so it would honor all gay vets.

Why are thete stones on top?
The dichotomy of it all. Geez.
Republicans are coming for gay rights next.
Irrespective of your beliefs, one cannot deny the poignant message this delivers.
Real
Powerful ….. real powerful
That saying gets me every time. Such a harsh truth.
The last line 😞😞😞
the saying is so fucking badass
I literally just learned about him yesterday!!!! This is so cool
>Recognizing military officials would not then allow such a marker in Arlington Cemetery, Matlovich chose a gravesite in Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Another reason was because the man many believe to have been the greatest love of poet Walt Whitman, Peter Doyle, is buried there. He chose the same row where the graves of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Hoover’s longtime Assistant Director and heir Clyde Tolson are, as a kind of “last laugh”.
Seeing the karma for the post go up and then down is a very sad reminder that people take offence to this.
What a beautiful gesture to leave your name off for the benefit of others.
This is actually an awesome thing this veteran did. Love it. Hate it had to exist.
Fuxking legend
What’s the significance of the different orientations of the triangles?
If your are wondering what the triangles mean, I’m pretty sure they come from the symbols the Nazis used to to signal why somebody was in a concentration camp. A purple triangle pointing down meaned the person is gay, a yellow one pointing up meaned the person is a Jew. These could be combine to form the famous “Judenstern” (Jews-Star).
It could also just be a coincident, but considering he apparently was Jewish and gay.
Sleep well Sir , sleep well.
That’s powerful, man. Fuck.
It’s crazy to think that only in the last decade have we as a nation allowed gays to serve openly in the military.
As a Vietnam veteran I approve of this message.
They ignore their god’s sixth commandment when it serves their interest, but will root around the bible like a filthy pig digging for truffles when they need to reverse the laws of this country.
My best friend lived in D.C. for 8 years across the street from the Congressional Cemetery, that Tombstone is there, in the same row as J. Edgar Hoover.
That man lived his life by his terms.
All gave some, some gave all.
Till they ALL come home.
We honor our service and veterans.
It is from people such as this that I have learned that I want to be who I am and have done all I was supposed to when I die.
this broke my fuckin heart omg
I find it real stupid that during pride month all of reddit is lit up with “no one cares if you are gay” even though humans have had a long history of violence towards gay people, and too this day being gay in some parts of the world will get you executed.
Till this day lgbtq people are still being discriminated against in the US and the US military seemed to care a lot if you are gay until the beginning of last decade and if you are trans only in 2021 did the ban for serving in the military get lifted. The fact is the whole world cares a lot about people being gay or trans so people saying that it doesn’t matter are simply wrong and are putting down people that have it hard enough already.
I appreciate this post because it brings attention to a fact that so many people want to discredit. It is has never been easy being apart of the LGBTQ+ community in human history and those who are should be respected as much. Putting more pressure on the community does nothing but make people more pissed off.
homophobia is dumb why are u mad that another guy is getting dicked down sounds like jealousy to me
In my office, I keep a small rainbow flag on my desk that says “serving all who served”. It’s a sign to let everyone know my office is a safe space, since I live in a very conservative rural area. Sadly, I understand why some still remain silent about who they are, because I’ve had other vets snarkily comment on the flag. How they feel that way towards their own brothers and sisters in arms is so disappointing.
He’s Jewish too.
1) 1943 – never again.
2) rocks on top of the grave stone.
