Read an interesting story once that when they mounted the model to the pole, the test technicians told the engineers there was something wrong with the test equipment because the plane was coming back on radar the size of a basketball and they figured something wasn’t working.
The engineers went out to the model, found some bird poop on it, wiped it off, and told the technicians to try again. It came back the size of a marble.
This is the upgraded pole. When they first tested the model, all they could see was the old pole. With all the previous tests, the planes were more reflective than the pole. The designer of this plane had to design a new one that had less reflectivity. Otherwise they couldn’t see it at all. That upgraded pole cost $250k.
