Harpo Marx with three of his four adopted children in 1954. When he was asked by George Burns how many children he planned to adopt, he answered, “I’d like to adopt as many children as I have windows in my house. So when I leave for work, I want a kid in every window, waving goodbye.”

How wholesome. Would make an interesting book/movie
From what I remember from his autobiography, George Burns and Gracie Allen helped them find their kids, who were the children of unmarried young women in the entertainment industry. Harpo and his wife were unable to adopt through a normal agency because they were a mixed-religion couple.
One of the kids, Bill Marx, became a quite successful pianist and scored several films, mostly B-movies.
Sweeet!
Harpo Speaks is one of my favorite books. Such a sweet man.
Joke’s on the orphans because he lived in a 2nd basement.
The only Marx who could go out incognito because his stage persona wore a wig, tatty clothes, and put on a silly face.
Own hair, normal clothes, straight face and he could blend in anywhere.
What a great story! He sounds like a real sweetheart.
As someone who grew up watching Marx Bros. films as a kid, Harpo was always my favourite, still cracks me up to this day
Then he’d never have to wash the windows!
I used to do that harpo gag where you lift your leg up and place it in the hand of the person standing next to you. I still think that is just too funny.
