I was a kid when this came out, 10 or 11, and I remember the trailer looked so fucking cool. I pleaded with my parents to let me rent it when it came out on VHS, but never got to see it. I finally saw it a few years ago, and…yikes! I’d have probably still loved it back then, though.
Such a delightfully silly movie. It really encompasses the whole VHS era of film, where just about any half-baked gimmick warranted a full-blown production and release
One of those piles I saw on late night cable in the early 90s. Where I couldn’t play a video game because it was set up in his room and it would wake up my grandfather. There was nothing else on. So you sat through whatever the hell TBS or Joe Bob Briggs was playing. And sometimes it was genuine fun, sometimes it was B movie so bad it’s good cheese and sometimes it was a total turd. This movie was in that last category.
One of my favorite films my whole life; the soundtrack is spectacular, the 1man2sides couples argument is a classic, and the action a brutally intense gymnastics hybrid…
…when you’re a 5 year old. Special place in my heart for this one.
I saw this when I was eight or nine and for the next two decades thought I had hallucinated it because nobody knew what I was talking about when I asked if they had seen the movie where a gymnast fights for his life in a deadly contest; they kept saying I was thinking of Enter the Dragon or some derivative of it. Then years later I move to a big city that still had an indie video store and presto! Found it in their “cult action” section. It’s *terrible* but in a very unique kind of way, like the filmmakers are really committed to to the story and it’s not just a gig, they’re just bad at it.
I liked this movie when I was a kid. And honestly, it could actually be a decent idea to remake, just lose the whole government and spy satellite angle and just have it be a guy who gets in over his head by wanting to take part in what he thinks is some sort of super exclusive and exotic type of competition in a foreign country. It’s basically a Mud Run or Spartan Race but with murder and the whole RE4 psycho village vibe.

This is one of those movies that I would watch every time it played on a Sunday afternoon.
This movie prepared me for what to do if there was a zombie apocalypse in a town that has a gymnast bar and a pommel horse
