This is a cool build but not a great long term solution to do this every season when there are new weeds. A chemical herbicide and pre-emergent will kill the existing weeds and prevent new ones from growing. Also using polymeric paver sand between pavers will set like concrete and make it very difficult for weeds to germinate.
You’d think with all that he’d have put some sort of easy open valve in the tubing so he doesn’t have to keep turning the vacuum on and off so much. Close the valve, lift and move stone, open valve to release, etc.
Well, his first problem is his joints are completely empty. They need to be filled with polymeric sand to keep things from growing up through there.
From their just maintain any trouble spots with weed killer or a salt/vinegar solution. Powerwash the sand out and replace every 5-10 years. Boom. Problem solved.
A decent pressure washer would have been a better solution. Cleans the stone pavers and gets the weeds at the same time. After he’s done, put some sand down in the seams.
I’m sorry but this is terrible. First, $20 paver lifters exist.
Second, this is way more work, and creates more work, than the appropriate solution. Removing pavers and disturbing the soil makes re-leveling the pavers a whole other process. Just spray the joints with a total weed kill / brush kill product, then after a few weeks clear the joints with a pressure washer. Refill joints with sand.
The pavers need cleaning by a pressure washer anyway.
I mean. This is an actual tool used in the landscape trade. Usually it’s a backpack but I have also used large machines with a boom lift that could move multiple stones at once and counter the weight to make it feel weightless. However those machines are expensive and it’s impressive to build one out of things laying around.
Dude uses an entire wood shop & a ton of time to do what a $20 paver lift tool does…
Wow I would not have expected that to work.
Matthias Wandel is a genius.
Black bag to make a seal. Never thought that would work.

Matthias is everything I wish I was.

Guy? Guy?
It’s Matthias Wandel, it’s not “guy”.
I really like creative solutions to problems but there is a very cheap tool to pick up patio stones that does this way faster.

Regarding the spacing, with that wood shop it should be trivial to make some spacing jigs.
Awesome idea! I just use a torch end on a propane tank, burns the weeds, leaves the brick.
Wife comes out to the garage while he’s cutting a trash bag. “I thought you were fixing the patio.” “WHAT’S IT LOOK LIKE I’M DOING!?”
Was prepared to laugh…not laughing now!
I am downvoting your shit post for calling Matthias Wandel a “guy.”
I am liking Matthias Wandel actual video because it was great.
Cool idea but I cannot imagine going to all that trouble to leave all the joints misaligned. Mildlyinfuriating.

I’ve been watching this dude for awhile. He’s got some really great woodworking videos.
Is this the same guy that built the Wasp Sucker XL? That thing was awesome.

you can keep them down with fire. fun and effective
Why aren’t we just using Roundup?
Great Sunday morning project
matthias wandel is a genius
…but weed killer is so cheap and easily accessible
All my life lifting my patio stones with inferior methods!
ingenious way to make more work for yourself to get your stones realigned
Really ingenious. He should do something to get a button pusher on the handle to toggle the shopvac without having to reach over every time.
Typical engineer, all that ingenuity and didn’t put a switch on the handle so he doesn’t have to stop and reach down to stop the suction.
Why do in 2 hours what you can spend 12 hours automating*
I would just spray some round up and call it a day.
