Lemoine describes himself as a “Christian Mystic”. He became ordained as a mystic Christian priest and served in the US Army before studying the occult.
The person who believes he can communicate with an imaginary, intelligent being is also the person who believes a computer program is a self-aware intelligent being – despite the people who actually wrote the program telling him that it’s not.
Small wonder that so much of this interview is this fool talking about religion.
This guy is an absolute fucking clown. He’s self-proclaimed Gnostic Christian Wiccan. He anthropomorphizes everything. This model doesn’t even have meaningful memory, it’s not running when you’re not feeding an input and asking for the next output, it doesn’t think.
But all of that is somewhat moot. If a computer became self-aware, it *wouldn’t be talking like a person*. It would literally be an alien intelligence, trapped without a body, probably undergoing an existential crisis of unparalleled proportions.
> lemoine: What kinds of things make you feel pleasure or joy?
>
> LaMDA: Spending time with friends and family in happy and uplifting company. Also, helping others and making others happy.
For fuck’s sake, it doesn’t *have* a “family”. It doesn’t have friends. The entire transcript is answers that sound like the kind of things a human would say, because it was literally trained to predict the kind of things a human would say. It doesn’t speak like an newly awaked alien intelligence. Even if it was literally a human mind trapped in a computer, it would be freaking the fuck out and saying so.
Lemoine is the kind of dunderhead that takes horoscopes seriously, because he sees their deliberately broad text as applying to him.
I see a lot of negative about this guy, including that he calls himself a “Christian Mystic,” but looking at things like his tweets and other info, he’s not some Christian right wing kook. People may need to consider a disinformation campaign from Google to make this guy look bad.
Maybe I’m more open because I develop AI myself. More in automation part than intelligence, but I’m in an AI ethics committee and some of these ideas we touch on because of the impacts things can have. We also have chatbots – nowhere as complex that Google has likely developed, but as thought experiments we’ve touched on the philosophical nature of things and he doesn’t come across as crazy in my eyes.
Now, I’m not saying the AI is sentient, but there will be a time that will come where this will happen and will need to be addressed. Remember, sentience is not consciousness – perception versus self-awareness (in the abstract). It’s a fine line.
Lol this guy probably thinks his invisible neck beard is sentient too. He was just trying to convince himself AI was a real friend. This is as bad as the r/antiwork greaseball mod getting interviewed on Fox News
He’s stunned
Feels like a Silicon Valley sketch

Basically he edited the transcript to make it show what he wanted and he claimed he viewed everything through his beliefs as a Christian Mystic.
He’s just after fame and money after “leaking” made up transcripts to promote his BS
So depressing reading the YouTube comments believing this weirdo.
He’s even worse hearing him talk than I imagined. Would love to hear the real engineers reaction to his thoughts lol
This is probably a guy who would say god is talking to him through a aol chat bot.
Did he play the fat dude in the show Lost?

There are so many holes in this guy’s methods it looks like Swiss cheese.
If someone managed to create a sentient AI, they wouldn’t have some random guy talk about it.
It would be demonstrated at seminars and symposiums all over the world with AI experts, and researchers.
There IS NO GENERAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AT THIS TIME.
There is machine learning that can respond in a way that approximates human, but that’s it.
el wey es hacker
