Underrated feature on DS / 3DS. Now you gotta buy 2 switches, 2 copies of the game and subscribe just to get your own islands and visit in Animal crossing.
Last day of school we were all allowed to bring our handhelds and some system link games (I remember Killzone and NFS: MW being two of them) would allow all players to play together off 1 UMD.
It wasn’t perfect but essentially you have the lobby leader host a game and then pass the UMD to each player to join. Once everyone has joined you didn’t need the UMD in to play so we could all play together off 1 disc 😂
I’m in the navy and was living (while at sea) in a mess with 30 blokes when this game came out, most people in our mess bought a DS when they were a thing, almost every night you always had at least 8 willing participants to compete in races.
Was super funny when half the mess was trying to sleep and 8 of us were quietly playing in our beds with the more than occasional “fuck you and your blue shells u/mattr1986”
Well the more large issue. They’ve quit rewarding us period. Instead of us earning unlocks, now we have to buy battle passes, and do the tiers. I hate it honestly. I’m 27 and I’m literally about to age out of gaming because every game now has micro transactions, and all the stuff is tempting to purchase, so financially.. no.
Over a lifetime you’ll realize all these Micro transactions are going to turn into 50k+. Edit: then just wait until you have 2-3 kids of age and they all want the battle passes… That’s the end game.
Total annihilation for PC was one of the first games ever with ‘shadow install’ as an option. A player who didn’t own the game could install from their friends disc and it would only let them play online, and only if someone who bought the game created the room.
Also Nintendo: “You already bought our roms on the eshop? Fuck you! You better pay monthly now and we dont grant you anymore access to your previous purchases on our newest console. GIMME MONEY!”
I have only one issue with the text; you can’t play everything. Only a couple cups (first two), one or two battle arenas, and everyone who didn’t have a copy was a Shy Guy with the default kart. Don’t get me wrong, it was still fun. But maybe the DS game had more cups available?
This feature was a godsend when I was on deployment in Afghanistan and we had time to rest and relax. 8 dudes all just sitting in our cots playing Mario Kart all night and just getting rowdy af lol
I used to date this girl, gamer/anime girl, she was alway horny too, and evetytime we made love, we ended up naked on the bed playing mario kart on our 3ds’s, such shame we had to part ways, it happened almost 10 years ago.
That’s not a thing anymore.
Jokes on them I don’t have 7 friends
With arguably the best character, no less, second only to Waluigi of course
It used to be about the fun.
Now it’s all about The Fun™®
nostalgia lives here
It’s my turn to post this tomorrow
Download play was awesome on DS and 3DS.

That game was so good!
Not entirely true tho, you could play the first cup of the two rows, that aint “Any map”.
Source: I used to be one of the freebies.
Nintendo today: “You dared mention Mario Odyssey in a video? We’re getting your ass banned from YouTube forever.”
Bold of you to assume I have 7 friends
Would love to see download play come to switch
Reminds me of the good ol’ days of the PSP.

Good times!!
It was my turn to post this 🙁
I knew this existed, but I never had another friend to play with :'(

Also Nintendo: I’ll sue you for thinking about an emulator
You bought the game 20 years ago? Fuck it, buy it again with minimal improvements full price.
Those were the days. You didn’t even need the same type of DS for crossplay to work.

But you could only use one kart! Which was fine I needed an excuse for being so shit at the game
The Iwata days.

That’s quite impressive. I didn’t know I could have 7 friends.
Mom said it’s my turn on the repost
Back when gaming was about gaming with friends and not a corporate cash grab
Honestly, golden age of Nintendo. I still remember bringing my DS on the bus to school- we would have so much fun racing each other. Shit was fire.
