Georgia O’Keeffe had given up on her dream of becoming a professional artist. But in the summer of 1912, her sisters, who were living in Charlottesville, convinced her to take a summer art class at the University of Virginia. Even though women were not allowed to enroll in the University at the time, they were permitted to take summer classes, and Georgia’s sisters, having taken advantage of the opportunity, enjoyed taking the classes and thought Georgia might as well.
So, at their urging 25-year-old Georgia enrolled in a class taught by Alon Bement. Bement introduced her to Arthur Wesley Dow’s theories of modern art practice. Georgia found the meditative techniques recommended by Dow liberating and invigorating. The rest, of course, is history.
The photograph of Georgia O’Keefe was taken at the University of Virginia.
Georgia O’Keefe was born on November 15, 1887, one hundred thirty-six years ago today.
