All those suit-and-ties gathered around George here are actually high-ranking Atari execs who presented him with this “sit down” Star Wars arcade cabinet as a special gift.
This was the first-ever Star Wars game released to arcades. And for the first time ever, this arcade game allowed players the opportunity to pilot Luke’s X-Wing in first-person view, shoot down waves of Tie Fighters and ultimately destroy the Death Star, just like in the original movie. No wonder gamers of that era went crazy for this game.
This arcade unit that Atari gifted to George was unique from all the other units shipped to thousands of arcades and pizza joints everywhere: Atari placed a special plaque on the right side of the cabinet – which is visible here above the artwork of Darth Vader, and just next to the Tie Fighter.
The special plaque that Atari dedicated to George Lucas reads: “A special thanks for creating THE FORCE behind so much fun.”

This game was so cool, it was the first game I ever saw with 3D vector graphics
I had this game for my IBM XT. You had to turn the turbo off to run it or it was too fast.
TIL
It was sooooo cool when it first came out. Lost so many quarters on this thing.
George looks mildly annoyed.
The best part was when you dropped the bomb down into the hole after you ran the canyon. For the time, it was an awesome game.
It’s like poetry, it rhymes.
