Gene Siskel liked Se7en but thought it was “needlessly grotesque” and should have been rated NC-17

one of my faves, but by today’s standards is just fine. Wishing The Batman was rated R
He’s right on both counts. It had an NC-17 equivalent rating here in the UK. But then the 18 rating doesn’t have the same stigma attached to it as the US rating does
I miss these guys.
And to be fair, he’s saying the movie is great but thought it could succeed just as well without some of the disturbing stuff. Ebert thought the same elements were quite disturbing but integral.
I actually agree with him, the acting, directing & everything of the movie was great…the graphics weren’t necessary…BUT it is what it is.
He’s got a point about the rating
Star Kevin Spacey vehemently disagreed, insisting if it was fine for someone over 17, then what was the difference if the person watching it was 13 or 14?
I also found it gratuitous, but unlike what seems like a lot of people I couldn’t see the redeeming qualities. To me it just seemed like someone wanted to think up a bunch of fucked up shit and put it to film.
I’ve asked people to explain the appeal of the film to me before but only got downvoted. If someone could put it into words I’d appreciate it.
edit: lol, once again the 8th deadly sin proves to be suggesting to r/movies that Se7en is anything short of a masterpiece.
These guys were elitist twats who couldn’t break into the industry themselves so they spent their careers shitting on those who did….there, I said it
The Lake Berryessa murder scene in Zodiac is worse and more grotesque than any scene from Se7en imo.
The level of macabre was distracting to me on first viewing, made it harder to take the drama seriously. Now knowing what’s coming, it no longer detracts.
You think that’s bad you should watch The Collector
Look up what he had to say about Silence of the Lambs. You’d be amazed!
“What’s in the box?!”
I don’t think it was too grotesque. Se7en walks a fine line between thriller and horror. Believability? Plus the noir elements, what a great flick.
Man the 90’s were a different time, I didn’t see this movie until… I wanna say… 2018? And while it was definitely a top notch thriller, you can see more graphic imagery on basic cable, in the middle of the day nowadays.
Hell I’ve seen comedy movies with more graphic violence and imagery than anything in this movie (the bullet removal scene from Game Night comes to mind, that was gnarly graphic for an otherwise by the numbers [still very fun dont get me wrong] action comedy, or Game Over Man, but that was going for grossout so it makes sense the violence would be so graphic and over the top).
Fun fact, ebert won an award for criticism. Lol
Gore but little violence.
RoboCop was much worse
Siskel was annoying like that. Roeper too.
I always found him tiresome.
“David Fincher, the director of Alien 3”. Lol I’m sure fincher was so glad Se7en was a hit so he could drop that appendix
I remembered this movie being extremely gory. It turns out that my memories were wrong. Se7en left that disturbing impression on me without showing much in the way of actual gore.
I remember seeing this movie in the theatre because 13 year old me had the biggest crush on Brad Pitt. In Canada, it was rated 14A… which is basically the equivalent to PG-13 in the US, and the whole time I was in that theatre, I remember thinking I probably shouldn’t have been watching it. It probably should have had an R rating at the time. Watching it now, it’s certainly dark, but I’ve since seen much, much worse. I don’t think I’d describe it as grotesque though.
