I generally like it. Has a “Showa” (i.e. 60s-70s) style as far as fight-of-the-week with a more grounded realism from more recent decades. Fights/setpieces are good, the monster redesigns are largely good, the kid characters don’t wear out their welcome too much (although the reason WHY, exactly, they are the main characters hasn’t been revealed yet), and at no point have I wanted Joel and the Bots to pop up. Okay, maybe a few points, but only because there’s a sad lack of the Gamera song (the one that MST3K “translated” into “GAMERA IS REALLY NEAT, GAMERA IS FILLED WITH MEAT!”).
However, it’s definitely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. For one, the animation is kind of weird. The human characters often look quite stiff, and the kaiju seem to teeter on the razor edge of hand-drawn and computer-generated.
Less of a problem for me but perhaps more of an issue for anyone who might want to use it to introduce their kids to the character is that the tone can’t quite decide who it is for. Like, the main characters are kids like in the made-for-kids movies of the 60s and 70s … but there’s heavy violence (you WILL see people get eaten, monsters get torn limb from limb, and entities meeting fiery demises), political/conspiracy intrigue that might go over their head, and some big-time swearing.
We’re gonna need another Kenny.
Gamera is really neat.
That looks…
I’m a few episodes in.

How kids friendly is it?
