  • Freddie died almost exactly 24 hours after issuing a public statement that he had AIDS. At that time, having AIDS was pretty much a death sentence. He was known to be in poor health for at least a year prior to his death.

According to his partner, Freddie was diagnosed in April, 1987, although he may have exhibited symptoms of AIDS as early as 1982, a few years before AIDS became a well-known disease.
