Found this at my local toy store and I never thought I’d be so addicted to this game again even after 20+ years.

There are newer versions of these around too. I’ve seen them in stores, but I think they’re like 12 bucks on Amazon currently. I highly recommend the Digimon X versions because they have a revamped combat system, rpg-esque battle challenges where you can fight a series of enemies for xp and items, and several QOL features not present on the DM20th.

They look almost exactly like these except they have an X painted on the front.

I had one in middle school that got stolen. I was so heartbroken about it for so many years. A few years back I saw that they rereleased them and grabbed a classic yellow one. Most joy I’ve experienced in forever.

I had something similar. Thought that it was evolving the more I fed it but in reality the image was of it just getting more and more obese. I really wanted to see what it would ‘transform’ into if the weight reached 100 so I force fed it a bunch of food one day and it fucking died.

6 year old me was devastated.

I loved my digimon so much, one time my mom got so exasperated she threw it into the snow, and I was so sad. Later that spring I actually found it! But it never really worked the same.

Wow, this brings up a very old vague memory but not in the way you’d expect. I never had a Digivice but others on the playground did. If I’m recalling correctly, there was some process to “Digivolve” that included inserting a plastic strip into a slot on the device.

I cut up a piece of laminated construction paper from some prior school project into little tiny strips and brought them with me to recess the next day. The friends said they worked in place of the official plastic accessory that was easily lost.

Congrats on the purchase, OP! I’m amazed it still works. Battery corrosion is typical in old finds like this.

I remember playing them back in elementary school. Mine always died every week because I keep leaving them overnight in my school desk.

I just preordered some a few months ago, they’ll arrive next month. They’re upgraded versions with LED screens and you can charge them through USB.

I have all the 20th anniversary ones of those. They had the original 1996/1997 colors and they added new ones which also had new and exclusive digimon in them (C and D would have apollomon and diananmon and when linked would jogress to gracenovamon. E had meincoomom and the good version of its mega stage. Also had a version where the entire thing was glow in the dark)

I just go punched with nostalgia seeing this. Totally forgot I had one as a kid. Need to find the original colourway I had online badly.

Digimon were awesome. You could connect them together and fight which was way cooler than tamagotchi and nano pets. I had something similar called a nano fighter that was a guy you’d train and connects to others to fight.

Still gotta give credit to tamagotchi for popularizing the whole idea though

It always bugged me how when these came out people derided them as a “Tamagotchi knockoff” when they’re both made by the same company, Bandai.

There’s actually a fan made mmo that utilizes these called Digimon w0rld. If you have an arduino and are comfortable with some light soldering, you can upload your vpet to the game and play.

I was so addicted to these things as a kid. At one point I had 10+ of them. Went to Target with my mom one day and ended up stealing like 8 of them in one go. We went out to eat afterwards and I remember going into the bathroom to get them all started up. Was basically “The King” of them at school.

    But, kids, don’t steal.. Lol

I remember my brother and I having the Frontier digivices that you could use to scan labels. He had the yellow and blue one while I had the white and blue one. I’d give anything to get another one, but all the ones I see on sale are incredibly overpriced.
