Working with food & bev industries on the engineering side it’s crazy the levels of difference between a proper operation and one just cruising as close to the sun as possible.
I can’t watch the whole thing right now, but I work in the Food Safety side of operations and am a certified auditor and all that jazz.
FDA is severely understaffed and/or inept. Last time we had someone from the FDA on site it was 2018. I know, because I just checked our 483 records last week. Oversight at the federal level is *rough*. They leave the plants with good track records and relatively safe, stable products (like ours) alone and focus their limited attention where its more needed.
That said, this is something where the private industries and states pick up the slack. There are numerous private certifications: SQF, BRC, FSSC (looking up this Abbott baby food plant, looks like they were SQF, which I personally consider to be “Plant’s First Certification” – it can be earned with a pretty barebones sytem) that require yearly audits, and the depending on the state the plant is located in, they might be coming in for annual inspection as well. My facility can expect 2-3 external audits a year in addition to internal audits from the company.
It’s as someone else in the comments said: It is crazy how different operations can be. That depends a lot on the company and culture. Some of the bigger international companies have developed their own rules on food safety that they audit themselves against (I know at least Coca Cola and Mars do this), and those rules were basically designed at a high level to be compliant anywhere in the world. You’re never going to hear of a Food Safety recall from those corporations’ brands. Their systems are basically designed against it right down to how they release product.
This should be unacceptable in the richest country on earth. But when a significant portion of the population are complete morons this is what you get.

The amount of chemicals laced on produce makes one question if their healthy choices are really healthy.
And this is why we garden.
