That’s just mean spirited. Seems far more likely this was tongue in cheek, referencing the ideas that over the centuries of encouraging people to attend Church sometimes you run out of something new to say.
BTW I’m not religious in any way and have never been Christian.
This is every sitcom go to church episode in a nutshell. I fucking hat those episodes.
