I work on the phone all day, taking alphanumeric confirmation codes. I have heard:
E as in eye.
Y as in you
Y as in Jello (thick accent, so forgiven)
But my new fave are the people who say C as in Ciara, and when I say S as in sierra, they are confused. Makes me nuts. Also makes me say S as in Sam a lot.
Used to work cable and we would use the nato alphabet to have dispatch mess with equipment when it wouldn’t work on our end. My friend, having a massive brain fart, tells the dispatcher “Alpha.. Mike….. Penis”.
Amazing. My last name is 16 letters, with a bunch of silent ones. I cracked up imagining how amazingly confusing it would be to use this alphabet with my last name.
The Barenaked Ladies put an Alphabet song on their children’s album that was like this. A is for aisle, B is for bdellium, C is for czar, D is for Djinn, etc.
Used to work in a call center where order numbers were alphanumeric, we made it a game to use crazy words for the letters. So AB1234 would be “a as in apple, b as in boy, 1234” etc. 14 years later, my favorite by far was “P as in pterodactyl”

The chosen words representing each letter are purposefully ambiguous.
