i still believe if you wrangle in david lynch just a little he can create some great art for all to enjoy.
the imagery may seem silly now, but its use and scope in storytelling and setting was great.
i like both versions, the lynch and the modern one, just a little peeved that one film didnt finish the book. at that rate its going to be 13 films to finish the books.
Everything in the new one is modern human earth experience related: sets, actions, dialogue, lighting. 84 is other worldly no reference to the human experience on earth. That makes it great.
I really like David Lynch, but mostly for his novel, fanciful, and straight-up bizarre takes on his art. As a big fan of the books, while I understood what he was going for, I never thought his style lent itself well to the story of Arrakis. I find that Villeneuve did a far better job staying faithful to and properly representing the characters, the setting, the ambiance, the feel, the vibe of Frank Herbert’s world. Take this specific scene for example. In Lynch’s version, Paul thinks to himself “she’s using the voice” and is seen physically struggling as he moves closer to her. In Villeneuve’s, she speaks, it’s as if Paul closes his eyes, there’s a cut, and when he open them, he’s beside her. The second is FAR more impactful, heavy, fearful and definitively shows how much more powerful the Reverend Mother is relative to Paul at this point in the story. It will make their future interactions (no spoilers :)) carry far more weight. You feel that in the book, and you do so in Villeneuve’s work, but not so much in Lynch’s, IMO.
This movie still rocks my world.
I’ve always heard this movie was bad, so I never did watch it. This scene was pretty damn good though!
I like [Elmo’s version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHK5fBm1YWk) from the new Dune.
[same scene from the new movie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbTp1vlRqYA)

This movie is great.
Script, not so much. Costume Design, Production Design, Lighting, just phenomenal.
