“Green Sea Turtle”, pastel and colour pencil, 90cm*60cm, ~200 hours in the making, ref Rick Beldegreen.
This is a David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation Wildlife Artist of the Year 2022 finalist. Prints are [here](http://www.alexflemingart.com/product/green-sea-turtle) (50 total, shipped worldwide).
It was almost entirely made from pastel. Unison and PanPastels provided the very blendable base, then mostly Carbothello pencils for the details, and Pitt pastels when I couldn’t quite get the right colour otherwise, or if I wanted slightly sharper details (Pitts have a harder core than Carbos).
Then a little Polychromos colour pencil as a final top layer of even smaller detail. It’s a bit of a crutch I’ll admit, but the range of colours in Polychromos is thorough, and the tips can be sharpened to the nth degree, so I kind of like that element of colour/detail control.
I use a grid method for all the details, and just take as much time as I need. I’ve found it far more valuable time spent recently to edit an image exactly how I want it to look before starting. In this case, I brightened the turtle, and increased the saturation.
I’ve been working as a dry media artist for 15 years, the first 12 of which were using graphite for human portraiture. These days I work pretty much exclusively on wildlife and pets, and donate 10% of all print sale profits to selected wildlife charities.
I’ve put all this info here to potentially save myself a little time answering the usual questions (I don’t like to ignore people but it has been a little time consuming in the past! XD). If there’s anything else you’d like to know you’re welcome to ask and I’ll try my best to get back to you. Have a great Monday! π

Bloody hell! That’s epic.
Incredible
Wow, nice job on the surface of the water!! With my level, it would have been a series of little triangles.
i refuse to believe people can draw this realistic
good day
If you said this was a photo you took I would not have doubted you
Don’t lie to me, this is CLEARLY a photograph. Great underwater photography skills!
DuuuuDe!
The fin AJ is my favorite. It blends in really well
Yeah we can all tell it’s a drawing- we can see the crayon strokes. Pretty good but I could do that, if I wanted to.
(seriously well done, btw)
The detail you were able to create is absolutely amazing!
Very beautiful drawing,
This is insanely good!!!
Itβs like Lisa frank in 4k
