Did it tho?
One missed detail that changed the attitude towards the game.
Doom 3 had one trick: haha we spawned two enemies behind you, boo! Rinse snd repeat for 10 hours
Even doom doesn’t scare me as I played alien isolation and I beat it
Anyone ask Civvie?
The first 20 minutes were scary and there was a mission most of the way through where demons don’t start attacking for the first 10 minutes. Other than those two sections, it’s pretty much straight action. The lighting and environmental design lent itself to horror but the gameplay did not.
Doom 3 was scary, but did you ever open a exit door in Doom 1 or 2 with a Pinky Demon right behind it? THAT shit was scary!
I have this game on the switch, it’s fun 🙂
After the 15th monster closet you get immune to it. The hardest part with scary games is getting past the first scare or two.
The graphics and audio in this game when I first experienced it as 12 years old in my cousins home… those “wow” feelings that game made cant be replicated
Man I loved this one, and the one to follow. This new one feels more fluid like the og, but the depth those two before it was amazing.
When Doom 3 released I was so excited but knew I had one shot to really experience it
I stayed up two days leading up to release
I waited till night time and everyone was asleep to install it. Turned off all lights, unplugged everything with even an indicator light. Headphones.
I was pushing 60 hours without sleep at this point and was outright hallucinating. Shadow images at my peripherals, tricks of light, objects seeming to move.
My near brain melting fatigue and the isolation I made for playing caused me to downright fucking merge with the game mentally. I WAS the Doom Marine.
Creeping into a bath room and cautiously opening every stall. Huddled in the back of an office cubicle listening to an audio log. I was there. My memories of the game arent memories of me playing it but more like remembering a vivid dream
Almost fucking killed me but it was so worth it
Honestly still get more of a sense of fear dread from Doom 1/2 and Quake 1.
The one thing that really got me was the airlocks between levels, they are the safe refuges in the game. EXCEPT ONE. About halfway through the game you enter an airlock and a fucking demon leaps out at you. This is the only time in the whole game it happens. But you’re super paranoid after. Haha
Man, this game at the time was terrifying. Me and a bunch of friends used to get stoned out of our minds and watch one of us play. Yea it had some silly logic like the flashlight, but definitely one of my favorite games.
There’s a vr port for oculus quest 🙂
For me, it’s REmake.
I’m the same with Dead Space.
I wasn’t afraid but my PC was lol. At launch this game ate and shat out any GPU available.
I love this game, the atmosphere is so well realized and the bestiary, art design, and sound are all top notch. Still gets me to jump every time I’ve replayed it.
Played it with the lights out and in the dead of night on release day. Same with Bioshock 1 and 2 as well as pretty much every Resident Evil game. Best way to play those~
The only game I never finished was Doom 3. My nerves just couldn’t handle it
Really? I feel like there last time I played through it a few years ago it felt…. toothless
At around 20, I
just completely lost the ability to dream, thus resulting in me being able to play this game.
For a time this was the only FPS I played and the only game I ever played on the highest level: Nightmare. Every encounter had to be done exactly. The slightest misstep and you were dead.
The two areas that were the hardest were the place where two gigantaplots spawn out of the void in a tight space and the blind beast with the flying shrimp lights where you get the Soul Cube. The only letdown was the final boss who was way too easy.
The other classic is Halflife. Just goes to show a game doesn’t have to be advanced graphically to be great fun.
